Been using the FX 6100 as the CPU in my WHS 2011 server. It's mostly used for server media and basic storage. However, it does see some regular duty in transcoding/re-encoding video files and it can struggle to transcode real-time full Blu-Ray rips especially to multiple devices simultaneously.

I am not really interested in doing much more than just dropping a new CPU into the same motherboard since the server functions fine; video encoding is just borderline and for $100-$150 it would be nice if I could get a 20-30% and still stay at a TDP of 95W. I had been considering just grabbing an FX 6300 while they are ~$100 at NewEgg, but $50 for 2 more cores seems like an interesting proposition.

Anyone got opinions on how the newer 8320E/8370E 8-core CPUs perform compared to an FX-6100?

If your mainboard supports it, I don't see anything wrong with the FX-8370E. You get an additional module (2 "cores"), a boost in maximum turbo (helps in single threaded workloads) and the 10-15% extra Piledriver IPC. All at the same 95W TDP.

Don't spend too much on it however, if you're on a budget the 8320E will do just fine.

Yeah, that's kind of the line of thinking I was taking. More or less just wondering how much the 'e' hits performance for multi-threaded video encoding.

Front page did a review of the 8370e.

Looks to be 10-15%.

Yeah, I looked at that but it didn't have an FX 6100 as a reference, nor did it have an FX 6300 that I figure would be about 10-12% better than the FX 6100. I figured the FX 6100 performance would probably be similar to the 125 Watt FX 4350 and hence, about a 35% boost to the 8370e. If I can get 25% from the 8320e it would be worth it.

Passmark Benchmarks the 8370e about 33% faster than the FX-6100 but I just don't feel like dropping $200 on the project. 8320e is looking about 26% better so the guess based on Anand's 8370e vs. 4350 should be pretty close.

So, on that note, anyone want a server-use FX-6100 that has spent 85% of its time idling and the other 15% encoding video at a good price?

:)

Before you spend extra on the 8730E, bear in mind that it looks like the 8320E is a pretty strong overclocker, even on boards that normally don't do well with FX octal-core chips. The 8310 is also worth a look.
