A quick check shows the cheapest 7950 to be $90 less than the cheapest 7970, so close. But even $100 less seems too much for me, of course I have not seen performance. AMD is going to incur a backlash if they keep this up.

Now I'm kinda glad I didn't wait and got a 7970 at $549. However some of the custom coolers look pretty "cool" and they are available immediately. Waiting patiently for the official reviews and the overclocking reviews...

they look about 100 less to me till you get to the fancy coolers but thats with every card in every price bracket so you cant single out the 7950 with that argument.

Not that I agree with the prices but it is what it is. As long as people open up their wallets it doesnt matter how much we scoff at the prices on forums. Until Nvidia makes a move the prices are relevant to the performance so complaining about it really just amounts to sour grapes if people buy them anyway.

Why is everyone complaining about prices? For one, pretty sure AMD set the MSRP of the 7970 to $479, so these high prices aren't entirely their doing. Secondly, they just came out, why does everybody freak out when parts that just come out are overpriced and ones that are about to be replaced are a great deal, its called supply and demand. Lastly, the 7950 is about as fast as the GTX 580, however when all is said and done, it is a much better card. The cheapest 580's are $479 last time I checked, with most at $499. Why should AMD undersell their cards? They arent trying to buy popularity like they were with the 4000 series.

The same speed to slightly faster than the GTX 580. What will set them apart is the overclocking headroom. Wait for the reviews tomorrow and you'll see.

$450 doesn't sound too bad when the GTX 580, stock, is comparable to slightly slower yet costs $20+ more and consumes a lot more power and has less OC headroom. I was waiting for the 1.5GB model to be around $350-370, but from what I'm seeing that won't happen. Maybe if the HD 7890 turns out to be good and costs around $300-320...

I'm surprised at the amount of people willing to shell out $$ for a 7970. I always thought there were very few $500+ gpu buyers. In a way I really don't care as it isn't my money but in a way it does. If AMD and nvidia figure out people are willing to pay big money for gpu's then it's eventually going to trickle down to the mid and low tiers.

Hope price competition heats up around the May summer time frame. These launch 7950 OC prices are about $75-100 more than I'm willing to pay.

As much as I like tahiti i'm inclined to say the market would probably like 1.5gb 7950's for 399$ better.

That said, some leaks are indicating that 7950 does outperform the GTX 580

Not sure if serious. It was NVIDIA that decided to put the GTX 580 at $500 when it launched just over a year ago. It's priced where it needs to if it wants to compete: somewhat faster, somewhat cheaper.
