AMD-761 VS VIA Apollo KT266, which one is better?

Just wondering which chip is better and faster, what are the pro and cons. Maybe a link or two to support your argument.

The reason I asked is because I have 2 epox boards, one epox ep-8kha and the other ep-8k7a. The only major differences I seems to notice is the chipset.

the AMD chipped board is more stabler...best would be to look at the 8kha+ <edit>...oh...you have those two you listed already...the AMD one is better if its the kt266 ...but what do I know..

now if you noticed that in that comparison...they are comparing the AMD chip to kt266A not the one you have listed in your first post above...the 8kha+ is the better of the two in that case...even with via's bugs

I absolutely think the AMD761 is better (more stable and better PCI performance), but the KT266A is faster (ever so slightly) and possibly cheaper.

he already has the 8k7a and the 8kha ...of those two...the 8k7a is the better board....now if he were to have that 8kha+(266A chipset) that would be a better board after bugfixxing( lol )

we are comparing AMD-761 VS VIA KT266, not KT266A, sorry about that wrong link.

761 is superior, hands down. The problem is, all the 761 boards use VIA's 686B south bridge. No thanks.

I've been the happiest fish in the pond since making the move to Tyan dual boards. S2460/S2462 (and soon S2466). Rock solid, with AMD core logic on both ends.

I did have reasonable success using a 761 board (8K7A) but I had to disable nearly every function of 686B to maintain stability and keep performance up. Mainly, using an all-SCSI disk subsystem and putting USB on a PCI card. YMMV.

Being a former user of Intel 440BX(read: the best), the more VIA in my computer the less satisifed I am.

I have a Gigabyte board with AMD 761 NB and an unfortunate VIA 686B SB, but I believe its better than full VIA based. I feel at rest knowing at least AMD chip is handling critical stuff like memory.

Yup. KT266 is a VIA solution of using a KT133A like performance chipset to support DDR. Of course, teh KT266A chipset is a different story.

The AMD 760/761 chipset is alot faster and better in performance than the plain jane KT266. There has been latency problems in Via's chipset and pci/ide performance has been sub-par. The 8k7a is supposedly a very nice board and has been proven to be a good overclocker too(with the AMD chipset). I would stick with the AMD if you have one presently.

AMD 760 is about 5-10% faster than KT266. It is by far better.

This issue has been in the forum many times. I repeat it again. The PCI latency probs will only affect RAID & SCSI configuration. If u r not using either one of those...it WILL NOT affect ur HDD performance under ATA 100 (UDMA 5) configuration.
