AMD 761 Chipset

I hear a lot about the 4in1 drivers and I remembered having to do that for my friends mobo, because he had a VIA chipset.

If I get a AMD761 chipset do I still need to install such drivers?

I think not. They still use VIA's 686B for trivial functions unrelated to the 4-in-1 junk.

If the 761 is as solid as I hope it is, my next upgrade will be Palomino.

Now, you would use drivers for AMD chipsets. The drivers will come from AMD website, though a lot of companies do use the southbridge from via, so you need to still use some of Via's drivers. In that case, it is best to use what drivers the motherboard manufacturers provide for that motherboard.

Trivial Functions? Like your IDE controller? Or the PCI bus arbiter? Hardly Trivial...

The AMD761 is just a north bridge. You need to pair it up with a south brdige to make a motherboard. AMD has their own south bridge the AMD766. Good luck finding a board with it though, I'm pretty sure AMD's reference board is the only one that ever used it.

Normally the AMD761 north bridge will be paired up with Via's 686B south bridge.

In that case you want to install the 4in1 drivers, but when it gets to the page that asks you which parts, you want to deselect the AGP Driver because that is a north bridge only function.

Then download the AMD AGP MiniPort and use that instead.

But yes, with and AMD761/Via686B board the 4in1s are still a good idea, as long as you don't use the Via AGP driver.
