AMD 760 Goin Bye Bye?

you're an idiot GTAudiophile, you know that?

I've owned pretty much every single chipest VIA ever done (MVP3, KX133 and KT266) and I've NEVER had a single problem with STABILITY. Sure I had AGP problems*** with the MVP3, but that was it. And that didn't compromise STABILITY.

I've always run my computers 24/7 and most of them had VIA chipsets.

Bash VIA all you want, but they do make EXCELLENT, STABLE chipsets.

btw, I'm now using a SiS735 simply because the price/performance was excellent. Afterall, that's why we're all running AMD systems!

Shnak

***now that I remember, I only had problems with TNT and TNT2 cards on that chipset... my V3 AGP worked beautifully...

Here's the issue I think. People don't realize that there is a difference between a unstable chipset that doesn't work at all and a chipset that has issues. Sure VIA Chipsets have had issues, but they allways have been fixed without a whole new chipset.

You're an idiot Shnak, you know that?

Via chipsets have compatiblity problems coming out the ass.

Every try to get USB working on an MVP3? I had problems with at least half the USB devices I tried, when USB worked at all. MPV3's USB and AGP implementations sucked.

The KT133 and Apollo Pro 133A were decent as long as not paired with the 686B south bridge, but that chip was a piece of sh*t.

Not to mention the performance of the Apollo Pro133A sucked it up (comparing PC133 to PC100 i440BX and it still gets it ass handed to it).

Via is a long way from making excellent chipsets.

Although I will agree people need to learn the difference between stability and compatibility problems.
And Via's probably not as bad as most people around here seem to think, but they are certainly not getting an A+ for their chipsets.

Wasn't the original intent of the 760 chipset just to give mobo manufacturers something to use until the other chipset vendors got their 266MHZ/DDR chipsets to market?

Flaming started already 😉 anyway there`s no perfect chipset if there was we would not be upgrading all the time, my input going from Intel to VIA as been positive very stable and all my USB devices work fine,at the end of the day we will all have different opinions etc.

🙂

Thanks, Nori.

AMD would have a customer in me if only they produced a non-MP AMD760 chispet. It might not be the fastest, but I bet it would be the most stable. Until they do that, or competing chipsets reach the quality level of Intel Chipset + Intel CPU, then AMD won't have me as a customer. I seriously doubt we'll ever see a "440BX" from VIA. Heck, I'm still running a 440BX and it gets the job done at 3 years old, while my friend's 6-month-old AMD Athlon 750+VIA K6133 just crapped out on him. He's ready to return to Intel.

<< Glad we have a bunch of 14 year olds in here defending Intel. >>

Always the mature one, good thing we have you around to keep us in check. 😀

I think that people have just been frustrated with their luck in situations with Via chipsets and have opted for something that is more familiar to them, and time tested to be a rock stable solution, I don't think that it in any way constitutes them being 14 years old nor defending a corporation other than the products that it produces. Good day to you, sir.

USB worked fine for me after installing M$ Win98se USB patch and I love via's CEO (a real cowboy). So who knows who's problem it was?
But now I'm using the sis735..

<< anyway there`s no perfect chipset >>

The BX came close in its day....😉

I'll say one thing, if the 760 leaves and isn't replaced by another, were not getting XP's at work then, this university stays Intel for a while longer...We've noticed Novell 's Zenworks has some odd ball issues with VIA chips, they just don't image correctly.. however there is a hope in SiS...

Who's gonna buy AMD760 now anyways? All the mobos use the Via 686B south bridge, so the KT266A with the newer south bridge is a better option.

<< There goes stability! >>

I'm sure you have experience with building many systems around Via motherboards, so why don't you share them with us? Or are you just following the other sheeps?

All aboard the train!!!!!! CHOO-CHOO!!!!!!!!!

You do know that 760 is NOT a MP chipset, right? 760MP came out later, the 760 itself was used (is used) in quite a few normal SP motherboards. Although now, with higher performing solutions out, there's no longer a reason to use it.

YMMV. I've been running my .25 classic Athlon for what, at least 2 years now, with nary a problem, and no crashes out of the norm for win98. From my point of view (which is price&performance), the P4 is not a compelling upgrade at this point in time. Not to say that its a bad chip; just that for less money I can get equal-or-better performance.

Well the only Via chipset I've owned was for a pentium 3 Katmai (tyan board) and it was unstable but i was a pc noob at the time plus i was running windows 98....

However, I chat with MANY people in IRC that have via/tbird boards and are VERY knowledgable about system tweaking/configuring etc. and they all get WAY more errors than i do on my 700@933 BX board.

When i first upgraded to win2k dude told me "watch out for memory dumps" .. well, I've NEVER had a memory dump in win2k or XP and been running them for months doing some demanding apps!!

this sounds like a VIA/AMD issue to me

How does one know when an error is due to the motherboard? How does one differentiate a problem with the chipset from a problem with a specific motherboard that the chipset is implemented in (i.e, how do I know that a problem is VIA's fault, and not just (insert least favorite brand of motherboard manufacturer here)'s bad motherboard design?)

Wow what a militant supporter of via chipsets. I've used them for years and am up 24/7 also and have had MANY problems and conflicts with them so I guess I'm an idiot too. I think overall they are pretty good tho but I know others who have more frustrating problems than me and I wouldn't blame them if they didn't like via.

Much the same way one isolates a hardware issue elsewhere. Try the suspected component(s) in another configuration. When did I realize VIA really was sh!t? When I had (at one point) 4 different KT133A/686B motherboards which exhibited the exact same issues with the same pieces of hardware. It was pretty evident who was at fault.

To be honest, until manufacturers break out of the VIA cycle and begin adopting other chipsets -- SiS in particular -- I think it'd be a shame if AMD quit producing the AMD760's. I also wish one brave manufacturer would ship a board with AMD761/766 in tandem, and quit using the piece of crap VIA 686B south bridge. I know it won't happen, but dreams can come true 😀
