Does anybody know the expected availability of motherboards with the new AMD 760 chipset? Having to use a VIA chipset is the only thing holding me back from getting a Thunderbird.

Specialist,
I just looked on AMD's website and didn't find anything but the press release for the 760MP demo (which said nothing about when to expect the 760 to be available). I have no real reason to not like the VIA chipset except for the fact that I would just feel better about a chipset made by the CPU manufacturer. Just a strange quirk with me I guess.

AMD's prior chipsets have sucked so I dont know why having a via chipset is holding you back(the 760 might be good but there are reasons the kx-133 id beter than irongate)

Umm which chipset are you refering to? The Irongate can still kick the KX133 and KT133 in some instances and it didn't even support PC133. The 760 is the reason I'm waiting to upgrade. There is just no comparing a DDR chipset to one of VIA's lowcost solutions.

SMP is one obvious reason to wait for 760, with Tbirds running under $130. I personally also hate VIA chipsets, and would at least wait for an alternative from AMD.

Another reason: 266MHz FSB, 266MHz DDR memory. Reason enough?? :)

Yeah, I'd have to agree, an Irongate chipset with SuperBypass enabled is very comparable to a KX133 solution. Only reason I went to KX133 was because of frequent lockups with my Irongate/GeForce combo....

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in preferring a AMD chipset to VIA. Does anybody have a good idea of when the 760 will be available? If it looks to be coming soon, I can put off my upgrade to wait for it. Otherwise I might go the Intel route:(.

sps, if you must upgrade now, you can at least try the Asus A7V socketA motherboard. It should be amongst the best KT133-based motherboards, and it finally did away with ISA. I have one in my room right now (uncle's new Tbird800 + Asus A7V + Asus GeForce MX combo), but I'm awaiting the cooler before I can test it. I'll report on the results if you wish, namely the Asus-Asus VIA-GeForce compatibility.

Buying Intel now is IMHO throwing money away, in the purest sense of the word.

Dark4ng3l,

My almost-year-old Athlon Classic 750MHz on an Asus K7M with a GeForce performs rather well and stably.

I've been gone for 10 days, and I left my computer on cracking SETI blocks for the entire period of time. Just got home, started using her - as stable as a freshly booted system. I used to have to reboot my 450A/BH6 every day or so to avoid BSODs.

So, don't knock it till you've tried it.
