I'm in desperate need of a new CPU...I thought I could wait for the new T-bird though. The only currently available chipset is VIA:s KT series, but I won't touch any of their products.

Anyone have information about when AMD:s new Socket-A 760 chipset with DDR support will be available?? AMD:s own press release says "second half of 2000"

In the past some sources have indicated late summer for introduction and september-october for first shipping retail boards. I'd give or take a couple of months, though, since even VIA KT133 mobos are hard to catch.

Speaking of VIA KT133, I have only positive experiences of it so far. I've had this Thunderbird Athlon 800mhz Socket-A + MSI K7Tpro combo up and running for a couple of days, and despite all the torturing tests I've put it trough, the damn thing refuses to crash. My biggest pre-purcache fear with this chipset, AGP performance and stability, seems very good as well. My old Celeron + BH6 (440BX) rig was by far less solid.

Asus V6600 Deluxe Geforce, overclocked to 140/190mhz. Not a single problem so far, runs very nicely at AGP4X w/ fast writes and sidebanding enabled. Athlon/GeForce compatibility issues were related to early stepping (pre C5) AMD-750 chipset and it's inability to deliver clear AGP2X signal w/ sidebanding.

I'm afraid I don't have much first-hand experience dealing with AMD-750 mobo/GeForce compatibility issues. A friend of mine has a pre-C5 stepping K7M (no superbypass) and an Asus V6600 Deluxe and the system works perfectly, albeit in AGP1X mode. You should just find drivers or the registery setting which revert system back to AGP1X mode. You might want to consult forums at AMDzone, a lot of Athlon/AMD-750/GeForce owners there.

AMD-750/GeForce compatibility problem is due to lacking AGP signal clarity in AMD-751 northbridge when used on motherboard with a 6-layer PCB*. AMD-751 revision guide http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/techdocs/pdf/22564.pdf appears to indicate the AGP problem will be fixed in northbridge revisions after C5, previously I recall reading from the same revision guide that this problem was already addressed in C5 stepping. I guess they changed it or I simply mis-remembered :)

* MSI K7pro and some other new AMD-750 boards run in AGP2X w/ GeForces since they have a 4-layer PCB
