this is brewing up to be like Bulldozer.

I have a feeling we will see some more of 6900s type of performance....

Be itneresting to see if this is true and what the reasons are. Also if Nvidia will have a corresponding delay as well.

I can imagine how all those people are feeling that were told to wait till October at the latest because the 7 series was releasing early.
Then they were told December, next it was early 2012, and now this.

I thought AMD said they were totally on track for release before the end of this year. Charlie at SA estimates Kepler at mid-2012 best-case so AMD is still going to be ahead, especially since their 6-series cards seem to be beating NVIDIA very slightly for performance at the same price points.

The latest rumor I heard was Q1 for 7000 series at the earliest.

The latest they're gonna get these out is Q1 2012, and I still wouldn't say a late Q4 2011 launch for the 7800 series is impossible. After all, it's only a die shrink of the Cayman keeping the same VLIW4 architecture.

Secondly, AMD's GPU department is the bomb, which unfortunately can't be said of their CPU department. They have enjoyed higher performance/watt, have a lead in manufacturing process, have GPUs with reasonable die sizes, terrific bang-for-buck (see $150 Radeon HD 6870), and great enthusiast cards. This is what we've come to expect from them ever since 2008, and like Intel since 2006 with their CPUs I see little stopping them now.

I just wish their driver department would be as good as their hardware department is.....

Figures. TM has been aweful for AMD and nVidia.

TSMC maybe? And it hasn't been "awful". Just because some noobs who know about 0.01% about semiconductor manufacturing get upset by some stories they read on the internet doesn't make it awful.

Are you kidding me? Having PC's with both nvidia and AMD hardware, I'd have to give AMD the definite edge in terms of timely driver updates, constant updates for crossfire functionality in new games, and performance enhancements over time. I understand that some people are extreme nvidia fanboys (and I could probably name a couple that appear in this thread) with blind devotion, but this is how I see things and owning both 6970 + gtx 580.

AMD has also reiterated that 28nm parts _WILL_ come out this year. The Q2-Q3 mentioned in that article was complete speculation by the author. We know that AMD stated as recently as a week ago that 28nm parts (I assume 78xx) will come out this year with tahiti following likely in q1 2012 (late). I'll personally take them at their word, because whatever side of the GPU fence you fall on, innovation and competition are good things. The bulldozer fiasco is unfortunate, hopefully that doesn't spill over into AMD's gpu division which has generally always been excellent.

AMD's CPU department has no street cred left.. but if AMD's GPU guys says 28nm releasing this year, i believe them.

I've used 6 nVidia cards and 4 AMD/ATI cards over the past 8 years. I give the slight advantage to AMD/ATI in the driver department and from what i've read I'm in common company.

Everyone gets antsy this time of year. It happens every year but no one seem to remember. There won't be any new releases until next year. In the mean time, companies will release cards for niche markets ie. low profile, low power, silent etc. This happens every year, pay attention!

Wow, I was considering waiting for the 7xxx series back in May. My gtx 580 purchase is looking very good now.

Must be almost as bad as the poor NVDA fans having to wait nearly six months for Thermi to arrive only to receive a hot, noisy overpriced part.
Must have been awful.:'(

I remember reading a thread earlier on here where the son of an AMD gpu department employee stated it (7800 series) would certainly be released in December, and performance would be similar to 6970. He was told to shut up because it would get his father in trouble before he revealed anything more to us.

So is it pretty much a given now that neither company - AMD or Nvidia - is going to be releasing any new cards this year that are faster than the gtx580?
