AMD 64 x2 .... 64-bit?

i am thinking of getting Windows Vista and wondering if my cpu can support 64 bit version

i heard someone saying AMD64 isn't real 64bit processor

what's the truth?

It is 64-bit capable. But from what other say on here, unless you have 4GB or more of ram. I wouldnt bother with it for the time being.

It is a real 64 bit processer...
There is an "Urban Myth" that it's not a "true" 64bit processer because it has the ability to be both a 32bit processer and a 64bit processer at the same time. You might say it's a dual purpose processer. But, that in no way detracts from it's abilities as a 64bit processer whatsoever...

Who the hell told you AMD64 CPU's are not real 64bit processors?!?!?! That was a blatant lie.

AMD was the FIRST REAL 64bit processor. I've been running WinXP x64 fine for 20 months now, first on my 4200+ and now on my Opteron 185. They perform superbly in a 64bit environment.

I think you mean the first 64bit x86 processer...there have been 64bit processers around for a very long time now.

Why would an AMD64 not be 64 bit?? And yes, it was the first X86 64 bit processor.

I've never herd of "fake" 64bit. Somebody is yanking the OP's chain.

now the next question is..

when someone says "x86" what does that indicate?
what about "64 bit" , because until now i thought they were the same

All socket 939,AM2, 940 and 1207 are full 64bit. I've run 64bit OS's on all of them, I'm not sure about all socket-754 processors but the Athlon64's are.

Of the K8 generation All but a few low end socket 754 Semprons models are 64-bit capable.

Well actually A64 really shines in 64-bit environment. It's well documented that A64 benefits more from going 32bit->64bit than Intel's Pentium/Core do. (Although Core 2 kicks A64's ass with its sheer power) One example why having the initiative at the instruction level can have a significant advantage in on-going performance battle between the two. It's also why AMD went ahead and announced SSE5 instruction set even before they have any SSE4 CPU, knowing that it's kind of a gamble.
