So I just came back home from college for the summer. When I left class, my desktop was working just fine, when I came back home, plugged it up and pushed the power button, I'm getting no response. Having just changed the PowerSupply to an Antec True Power 430 after the old stock one that came with the case blew, I figured it couldn't be the PSUP.
Puzzled, I took it to Fry's Electronics to see if the could diagnose it. They checked the Power Supply and told me that was fine. However, they managed to do some trick to get it to power up and immediately told me the fan to the CPU wasn't spinning, and that the motherboard looks to be bad. However, my motherboard came with a little Diagnostic piece that fits in one of the PCI slots and has 2 additional USB ports and 4 LEDs that supposedly should assist in diagnosing problems. All four 'red' LEDs were on, which when I looked at the motherboard manual, suggests a "Damaged or improperly installed CPU"
I know it couldn't be improperly installed because it had been working just before I brought it home, so I wonder if it could be damaged.
I have had this motherboard/CPU and most of the parts for 5 years, but now I'm confused. Obviously something needs replacing, I just can't figure out whether its the motherboard or CPU. I want to fix it spending the least amount of money since I already have 2GB of RAM and a video card I am happy with for the motherboard (it's AGP an ATI All in Wonder x800XT so I suppose ancient with PCI-E now) and don't feel the need to replace both the mobo and cpu if not necessary.
Unfortunately, my motherboard, an MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R has 3 DDR slots for memory ( I have 1 1GB, 2 512s) so I like that, it has 7.1 channel audio, and onboard firewire, along with an AGP 8x slot for my video card, all which I love. I can only find it for $125, whereas for a motherboard that is just a standard socket 754, 2 DIMM slots, and an AGP, (no firewire, no 7.1 onboard audio) for $20 refurbed from geeks.com
Really I just want to know based on this if someone may be able to advise what needs replacing and where to get it for the cheapest to make my rig up and running again.
Oh ya, my chip was an AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Thanks to all in advance for help!
