Hi

System which I want to buy:
Amd 3400 64
Asus K8N
512mb*2
120sata
17"flat samsung 793mb
altec lansing 251(5.1)

My comp engineer says that i need min 1kw ups.
Is it true?

The system will use some power. An P4 Prescott 3GHz with 2x160GB SATA disks, 1GB RAM, will shut down a 500W UPS when a 17" CRT Samsung monitor starts. While its continuus used power (for the monitor) is like 100W, it can request shocks of current of several amperes.
Also, a bigger UPS will get you more running time on batteries

Wait a sec guys, UPSes do not generally realize power in terms of watts, but in volt-amps. They deliver complex power, not realizable power. Why does this matter? (ex. look at the bottom here (http://www.apcc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=22) - 200w is a lot more in Volt-Amps, yet Volts * Amps is power (Watts), so what's going on)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apparent_power

For example, given APCCs 200 W -> 320 VA conversion, 1000 VA is 625W - which is a reasonable amount. The ratio is determined by the phase offset power factor, which is explained in that link.

Well I have a 1500VA UPS and my 19inch CRT and rig uses up around 30% of it's capacity according to it's monitoring software. As you are not really supposed to load them up more than 70% or so(Like a PSU, they get less efficient due to heat when heavily loaded), I could see 1000VA as being reasonable for a somewhat high end A64 rig.
