I'm currently going back and forth between getting a socket 939 3500+ or going with the cheaper socket 754 3200+ and using the extra money to upgrade my GPU, and I could use some help on some memory issues.
I know that the socket 754 AMD 64-bit CPU's are incapable of addressing more than three banks of RAM at DDR 400, which means that if you want 1GB of RAM at DDR400, you need to either have one 1GB module or two one-sided 512MB modules. Does anyone know of any low-latency (no worse than 2-3-3-7 1T, but ideally 2-3-2-6 1T) single sided 512MB RAM modules?
Also, does anyone know if the socket 939 64-bit CPU's have the same restriction on them, considering the fact that they are capable of running in dual-channel mode? If I can run two low-latency double-sided 512MB modules at DDR400 in dual-channel mode with socket 939, but can only run higher latency modules or two low-latency modules at DDR333 with the socket 754, that would probably sway me in the direction of the 939.
BTW, upgradeability isn't an issue, as I tend to upgrade every 1.5 to 2 years and in the last decade have *never* upgraded a processor without upgrading the mobo as well. Also, I'm not much for overclocking, so that isn't an issue either.
Once I make my platform decision, I'll be looking for some more feedback regarding specific hardware.
Cheers!
