My computer is a old slow ass 1.6ghz p4. With the prices of a amd64 3200+ ~280 and a 3000+ around 200, it is reallly tempting to make the jump to amd64 right now. But socket 754 is outdated, soon to be replaced by socket 939 but right now, 939 is way too expensive. The 3500+ chip costs 400 bucks cheapest! Thats way beyond budget. Socket 754 is a value line but i don't want to buy something today and become obselete in 6 months. Then there's the 90nm chips, nforce 4, pci-express, ddr2 all on the horizon in the coming months. Sounds kinda stupid to be building a amd64 system now when you could all the new technologies in the fall but then itll probably be expensive.

But then there's the idea that making the jump to 939 would be stupid because many of the exisiting technologies today aren't even exhausted yet and used to the fullest abillity like agp 8x, and ddr2 will be slower than ddr1 when they first come out. Then there's the factor about a new chipset like nforce 4, and all the problems that might come along with a imature chipset and all that jargon that comes with new stuff. Some say that all this stuff won't become practical until 2006 at least.

phew, that was long...

So considering all this, should i make the jump to amd64 right now with socket 754, or wait a bit for nforce 4, socket 939...?

Wait wait waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiitttt...

k...

:)

The prices of the Amd 64 line are going to make a major shift in price within a month or so. I've heard that the 2800 64 will reach $140 price range and the 3200 will reach $220's and a 3400 in the $280's.

Still not confirmed though. I think.

Peace,

Pixle.

The prices did just drop. 166 for a 3000, 144 for a 2800, 288 for a 3400 on pricewatch.

The thing with computers is, you can wait now, but then when that time finally comes, you will have to wait another month for something new to come out and you will end up waiting forever.

And, Where did you hear that? They did just drop a little bit.

Both the 754 and 939 arent going to be real standards for a long period of time. PCI Express will be standard by the time you want to upgrade anyway, so you if your one who likes to be on top of technology, thats something your going to want, so I feel the 754s are more worthy of a purchase since for the time being, they are great and will last a while. I plan to get a 3200+ which should last me a while until maybe about a year I will do an overhaul. Maybe new mobo/cpu maybe ram and video card if needed.

This is the way I think of it. Pci express means very little now. And likely won't mean much until later next year. 939's 90nm are well... cream of the crop. Very expensive.

So you have two choices.

1. Get a 939 set up and have an upgrade path for the next 2 years. This will of course, cost you one pretty penny. If you want the best now, you will always spend a lot of cash no matter how long you wait. Because when you wait for the best, it will always cost the most.

2. Get a 754 A64 3000 with a Nforce 3 250 pro chipset. This will allow you to overclock to a A64 3500 for a considerable savings of over 300-400 dollars. The performance in which you will have will last you well over 18 months if not 2+ years. The lack of PCi-express and dual channel ram will mean little in the short interim.
