AMD 64 or P4?

I want to upgrade my AMD XP 2000 computer. I can get a good deal on a AMD 64 3000+, and a P4 3 gig. Which is the better buy for the same money?

Well, you don't specify if the p4 is a northwood or prescott, or if the A64 is s754 or s939. In general, the A64 will be better for gaming by a decent margin, while basically close to the same in other areas. And I do miss larger storage, after I got ut2k4 (5 gigs), doom3, far cry, and HL2 I have no room left. It sucks uninstalling things all the time when you did all the work of installing with 5 cds...

In most cases, the A64 will deliver more performance than their 'equivalent' P4s, whether Northwoods or Prescotts.

If you want some indicator of the performance of the newer 3000+ Winchester, you'll have to look at a more recent review. There are also numerous posts that essentially ask the same question that you're asking here.

Well who Woke u up.... I just wanted some PEOPLE who have run both to give me their view on both. A bunch of benchmarks only are good if you use the same set up. I want the overall view of them both. And by the way...Merry Christmass to all!

the athlon 64 setup will be faster. amd currently has a better overall performing set of chips vs intel's.

I have the a64 3000+ newcastle, upgraded from a barton 2500@ 2.2, and let me tell ya, its like getting out of grand prix and getting into a corvette

I have a p4 3.8C and an AMD 3000+. I cannot tell them apart when gaming.

either you are overclocking, or you mean 3.8E... in any case, if that a64(and the p4) is at stock, which everything in your post points too, that would mean you are comparing a 150$ AMD chip to the fastest p4 in production now...

You woke me up. And, the purpose of benchmarks is to compare a number of different hardware components of the same type(in this case, CPUs) on similar platforms so as to isolate the effect the aformentioned hardware components have on overall performance.

In other words, no, the benchmarks are not limited in relevance. They do give you an idea of how an Athlon 64 3000+ might perform against a P4 3.0 ghz. You can reasonably assume that the differences in performance will be present no matter what the platforms for the respective CPUs, so long as both platforms are roughly comparable.

Furthermore, I did more than tell you to read benchmarks. Use the search feature to find other posts in this very forum in which "PEOPLE" ask the same question you just asked, over, and over, and over, and over, and . . .

This thread is utter crap and flamebait.

We have already beat this topic to death.

Intel still leads by a small margin in Video Encoding and Decoding.

AMD has a decent lead in everything but gaming where they have a large lead.
But damn though who really cares which one is faster when the Intel comsumes ~3x more power and has enough heat to roast marshmellows on.

Right now AMD hands down.
