AMD 64/nf3 architecture question reguarding memory.

Ok, I have an Athlon 64 2800+ newcastle, and a GAK8NS NF3 250 board.

It has 3 ram slots. I have all 3 of them full. I have 2 512 chips, each one is double sided. I have one 256 chip in the last slot and it is single sided. They are all PC3200 btw.

In the bios, I can change most settings. If I have the memory set at auto, it will always boot up at 166mhz(pc2700) instead of the default 200. Now here is another thing. I dont know if the ram at this setting is 1T or 2T. In the bios, it has a section titled: Enable 2T timing, and it gives me the option of enabling or disabling or auto. The memory goes to the 166mhz if this setting is at auto. If I select to disable 2T timing, for some reason, it will boot up at 100mhz.

Is this a problem with the motherboard, the processor, or just the architecture itself? Why can I not run at 400Mhz and 1T timing? If the 2T setting is at auto, and I force the memory to run at 200mhz(pc3200) then the pc will crash. If I set the T2 timing option to off, then set the memory to boot up at 400, it will boot up at 333mhz and crash sometime in general use.

Does anybody have any idea what could cause this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Anyone know? Would a new board allow me to run 1T timing at the full pc3200 spec with all 3 ram slots filled?

I believe, that you cannot run 1T timings on AMD64 with 3 memory chips regardless of your motherboard.
You might be better off removing the 256MB chip altogether (1Gb is often plenty enough).

The A64's RAM controller (chipset has nothing to do with it, remember) can't handle more than 2 DIMMs at DDR400 and must run 2T with more than 2 DIMMs.
I'd also take out the 256 module... 2T can really impact performance on the A64.

Definately start by taking out the 256 module. try memtest then only if you still have stability issues.
