Hey,

What is the quietest, but still effective heatsink/fan/thermal paste I can get for an AMD Athlon 64 3200+?

Price is not important.

The most i'll overclock would be 400 mhrz, but I'll probabaly only overclock 0-200 mhrz.

Thermaltake makes the K8 Silent Boost which I actually had at one point. Seemed about the same as the stock HSF that my 3200+ came with. I run a Thermaltake Volcano 12 now which isnt too bad at 3000rpm but whoa watch out at 6000. Cooling is excellent and I rarley go above 45c under load.

Its my video card I worry about... under load it runs at 79-80C and around 50-55 at idle. This is a Radeon x800PRO at 510/545 clock settings with the stock HSF. I have a Artic CoolingVGA silencer coming tomorrow or Thursday which I hope will lower the temps even just a few clicks.

TT = no go for me, I had TT products in the past, and "silent" to them means VACUUM CLEANER LOUD... (Volcano 6 Cu+, anyone?) if you want quietness and good performance plus a little head room, get the Zalman CNPS 7000 HSF + Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste (just make sure you don't get any anywhere but the core, it's conductive)... if you don't want conductive thermal paste, get AS Ceramique, the ceramics-based paste.

The new alpha heatsink PAL8045 for the A64 is one of the best out there, it performs on par with the SLK948 U

Where's the core of a CPU?

The Thermaltake Venus 12 works great for me, and the temperature-controlled fan means that it works hard only when needed. I love mine!

My setup

Athlon64 3200+ Newcastle (210x11 = 2310mhz)
Swiftech MCX6400-V w/ 92mm Antec (idle 38C, load 52C)
Radeon 9700Pro (6800GT coming soon)
Northpole Northbridge cooler
Asus K8VSEDX
1024mb Kingston HyperX DDR400 (512x2)
200gb Maxtor
Antec Sonata (120mmx2)

It runs pretty cool, around 38 - 40C idle, and highest I've gotten it was aroun 54C after ALOT of Painkiller and FarCry.

But I only o/c'ed it by 110mHz. I had it at 2400 (o/c +200) for a while and it ran around 44-46C idle, not sure about under load. I can only imagine what 400mhz would do as far as heating. Probably around 54-56C idle.

All temps are reported with MBM5.

I like the Swiftech, sure its heavy and pricey, but it cools pretty well. be careful during installation though, as the aluminum coils are supposedly fragile (no problems with mine). Use good thermal paste and CORRECT installation procedure, and any higher end HSF should do you good.

If price is no object though, you should look into watercooling or phase-shift cooling (you could probably go 1000mHz o/c with a good phase-shift setup).

Coolermaster Hyper6 + Panaflo L1A, undervolted. Slightly behind that would be a Zalman 7000 radial flower, undervolted.

AMDguy: the 8045(T) is for AthlonXP, and is nowhere near the performance of the SLK948U. The new 8055 doesn't seem to be near that, either, though is a nice heatsink. The 8150 is for the A64s, and performs quiet well, though is still bested by Zalman, TR, and Coolermaster (though not by a whole lot, suprisingly).

For paste, Arctic Silver Ceramique. Very thick, easy to use, non-conductive, non-capacitive, and gives great temps.
