the fan on my cpu runs constantly at 5800rpm. i could understand that while gaming, but it also does it at idle. do the amd 64 stock fans run only at a constant speed? i was reading in another thread that said they have a thermistor in them, which tells me they should vary with temperature.

my cpu temp is pretty constant at 48 C, which seems normal.

any thoughts?

5800 is insanely loud, i'm guessing that's the maximum speed as I've never seen it go that high. I'm not using stock anymore, but when I was using stock, it would bottom out at 3000RPM when idling, and get to about 5000RPM when i'm doing heavy gaming. It didn't matter if I had Cool'n'Quiet acivated or not.

maybe the thermal sensor on the fan is busted. Maybe you can get AMD to send you a new fan.

The stock one I was using which was MarkFW900's retail cooler form one of his opteron 248's would run as low as 2000's and ramp up to high 3000's under extreme loads and when heat was above 50c's....

I can't imagine AMD would have the fan run a constant or even a thermally controlled max speed of 5500+rpms...They say at their website that new acoustic guidelines are 36db and that is much louder then 36db. I have aTT venus 12 which is not much bigger (deeper yes) and 5500 rpm is a hairdryer to say the least...

The AMD fan that came on the stock sink of my 2800+ runs at 3375 always,I never seen it go any higher.

wow something is diffenately wrong with your fan. i remember when i first installed my winchester, i was stupid and took the heatsink off and put it back on w/o putting a new coat of thermal paste on. the fan was constantly at 5800RPM no matter what i did. then, i took the old stuff off and put on some AS5 (applied correctly) now my fan speeds stay below 3000RPMs. so, i would re-apply your thermal paste and see if that fixes it, it did for me.
