AMD 64 compatibility

I was wondering how I could determine if my motherboard etc would be compatible with an AMD 64 bit processor. Could anyone help me determine that? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Athlon64 cpus require a NEW board compared to the AthlonXP

AthlonXP = Socket A
Athlon64 = Socket 754
Opteron/AthlonFX = socket 940

For Athlon 64 (not Opteron) the motherboard would need a socket 754 CPU socket and compatible chipset such as VIA K8T800+8237. For EPoX we have the EP-8HDA3+ but I'm sure other brands have many similar items as well.
