Hi everyone. I know AMD recently released their 939 chipset, but it seems to be lacking in modern features. For instance DDR2, PCI Express and hard disks with native command queueing. Are these features (whcih Intel recently launched in their latest chipset) going to be available for the Athlon 64 / 64 FX anytime soon? Or at all?

Thanks,
Jared

PCI express will probably start appearing on AMD64 chipsets quickly. However, most of Intel's "Improvements" offer no real world benefit to either processor as of now. AMD is taking the wait and see approach. It's anyone's guess when we might see most of this tech on A64, if at all. It really hinges on if Intel can make this slow start into something worth purchasing.

I think there were some previews of PXI-Express motherboards for AMD64 on AT a few weeks ago. Maybe check the Comdex stories.

DDR2 doesn't seem to help out Intel much, so I'm guessing it won't help AMD64 just yet. I can live without the pricier memory.

S939 is for general consumers, so seeing no native command queueing isn't a surprise. Is it supported in any SATA chipsets yet? I thought I read that it would be supported in SATA2. But it's available in SCSI, so move up to the good stuff.

1. AMD didn't release jack in chipsets. It's a new socket. The chipsets are the same as the socket 754 ones.
2. DDR-II will offer nothing until 667MHz, and not worth using until 800MHz. DDR-II 400 and 533 benchmarks on the new Intel chipsets have proven my thoughts more than just speculation :).
3. Yeah, we are still waiting on PCI-E. SiS and VIA have some in the works. No ETA other than "soon," but the need really isn't there yet, and won't be for a few more months. Intel jumped the bandwagon off, and everybody else is still waiting for their morning coffee before they get on.

AMD are playing the waiting game.

Just as Intel did when AMD released 64BIt.

And well they might, since PCIE follows the exact same pattern as all other recent Intel initiatives, - It's slower!
