I'm currently running a Intel Pentium 4 3.0C with an ASUS i875P chipset mobo, and dual channel DDR400 memory. Would it be faster for me to switch to the mobo/CPU AMD is offering with their retail access deal? The AMD 64 3200+ with ASUS K8V SE Deluxe mobo. Wondering if its worth my time to switch.

It would be better for games, probably worse for encoding. I think they're pretty close so it's not worth switching unless you really want to go A64. However, I'd snatch up that deal first and then decide. Regardless of your decision, that is too good to pass up. Resell it at least and either make a little cash or break even. I know a lot of non-retail employees that would kill for that package (myself included).

beware, the overclocking for the k8v deluxe (or ANY via chipset) SUCKS.. i only got 350 on my asus k8v se deluxe... which was a great overclock for my board but obviously not a good overclock for my chip

Keep what you have. If you sell that P4 mobo/proc for $320 max (thats retail price!!!) then buy your A64 for $400 will cost you $80 total...For what? Seen the benchmarks? neiglable differences.

Edit If I were you I would bump up to 3.5 for free:)

With the retail access deal he gets the Asus motherboard and A64 processor for $179. So realistically he could make a profit from upgrading if he sells his old P4 3.0C and mobo. And if he doesn't want to upgrade, might as well make a quick couple hundred bucks by getting that deal and then selling the parts. Not to mention the package comes with farcry and a t-shirt as well :). With a little work he could upgrade to a slightly better system and come up in the green by about $100 or maybe even more.

No I would be paying $279, since I'm not eligible for the rebate. Unless they will take my few month old pay stub from when I used to work at Circuit City :-D

I'm in the same boat as you OP.

I got in on the retail Deal and I had an IC7 setup with a P4 2.66@3.0, I dont have enough components to run em both side by side. but so far I feel that the 3200 setup is probably on par with my old Rig.
