A good deal for non-overclockers. For overclockers, even a 2140 will outpace this at everything, when both are overclocked to the 3ghz range.

If I had an AM2 motherboard I'd literally buy one while waiting for my next "major" upgrade (Penryn). It's a very nice offer from AMD, despite the aging CPU architecture.

Yeah, I hate that AMD went with AM2. If they had stayed with 939, they would have made it a lot easier on the market for upgrades. As it is, going from 939 to AM2 is crazy, because if you're buying a new board, you're going Intel (unless you're dirt poor or uninformed). But it would be awesome to drop something like this $100 chip (a good performer!) into an old 939 board that you've been happily using for 2 years.

I realize that the market was going to DDR2 (thanks for nothing Intel!), and that sort of forced AMD to follow suit (DDR1 got real $$$), but it sucks nonetheless. An X2 3800 939 vs. X2 3800 AM2 shows like 0-1% performance difference DDR1-400 CL2 vs. DDR2-800 CL4. So pointless :(

What does it matter? Any decent mobo you'll hit the same overclocking ceiling anyway. I guess if you want to keep your memory at totally stock speeds, it's good. Just seems like too little, too late. X2 is dead, outside of people with existing boards that want better procs.

"Black box edition" kinda describes AMD's market position in a nut shell :)

But seriously, this item has very limited appeal IMHO as most people will either go Intel on the cheap or like me buy a X2 3600+ and take it to 5000+ speeds and beyond.
I noticed Newegg lists this as having 2x1mb L2 cache which is wrong for a Brisbane CPU as they were only designed with 2x512kb L2?

Yeah thats what I was about to post was the 2x1Mb cache thing??
I was under the understanding that brisbanes were all 2x512??
If they really are 2x1mb I will buy one of these to toy around with just for something to do.
That would be so cool a 65nm dualie with 2x1mb overclocked to 3.2-3.3

As noted above, Newegg is wrong on the cache of the 5000+ Black Edition. Also, note that it does not come with a CPU cooler. It is a good choice if you want the best Brisbane chip, or if you really need the unlocked multipliers. However, any remotely worthy overclockable board can get quite spectacular overclocks out of the higher end (over $100, haha) AMD chips.

My choice for AMD chip would be the ADO5200CZBOX. It is 2.6GHz with 2x1MB cache (really!) on a 90nm process. This particular chip, however, is a lower voltage version and is AMD's highest performance CPU rated for 65W. $126 shipped, including a HSF.

Yea, the black box editions are unlocked I guess.
no, the 6400+ is black box, too, and it's not unlocked. iirc, that one doesn't have a hsf, either.

Also, the 6400+ isn't a Brisbane, so it does have 2x1MB cache.

Oh forget it then I only wanted it for the 2mb cache and a unlocked multi.
I thought I would get it and overcock the crap out of it and maybe use it for a HTPC or a folding farm but what ever.
Not that one can really nag about the pricing I mean its only 130 or so and able to hit 3.3 so personly I think thats damn nice for a on the cheap cheap build.

I never said it did or didn't matter. I was just asking a simple question, because a non FX chip curiously seems to have unlocked multis.

all "black edition" amd processors have a unlocked multiplier. end of story.
