I recently picked up an asus 4850 (good deal from newegg) for use while I wait to decide between a gtx280 and a 4870x2 (30" display), the 4850 will move to one of my media centers when I buy the real upgrade card. The card does not appear to work with my 780i, computer posts (and 780 indicates it boots) but I have no display, the fan on the card is at 100% (or at least very loud) and there are 2 red leds that light up on the back of the card, I tired it in another machine (with a p35 board) and it seems to work there (at least I can get into windows I didn't try any games/benchmarks, and it is connected through hdmi to a tv vs dvi to a monitor on the 780i) so the card does not appear to be doa, but I can't get a display with the 780i. Any suggestions as to what to try or as to what those leds mean would be helpful.

When you say the computer posts, does it mean that it takes you to BIOS screen? Or you just hear a beep and fan sound, without nothing on the screen?

Make sure you try both DVI ports, and try plugging back in your 7800 GTX. If 7800 GTX works but HD 4850 doesn't, it's slightly more complicating because the board *might* have an issue with PCIe 2.0 cards. (Unless you have PCIe bus overclocked) To make sure, take every PCI/PCIe card out and put 7800 GTX back in (on the top PCIe x16 slot), and boot the system. Enter BIOS and set everything to default. Disable anything that says 'NVIDIA GPU' or 'SLI Memory', etc. Reboot, enter BIOS again, and shut off the computer. Unplug the power and insert HD 4850 and reboot.

CMOS clear if you're confortable with it. Do you know the BIOS version of your 780i board?

7800gtx works, when I say it posts my usb drives/hard drives spin up, the display on the motherboard cycles throuhg everything then goes to FF (which is supposed to be rigth before post) and if I restart with the 7800gtx windows evne says it was not properly shut down (which means when I turned it off with the 4850 it had partialy/completely booted), the problem is I never get anything on the display. The procesor is overclocked but the pci express bus is not. I have not updated the bios since march or so, so I guess I could give that a try to see if that resolves the issue (though the latest bios says nothing about graphics related updates).

Yeah. And if things don't work out on your end, I'd call EVGA. They're pretty good at customer service. Good luck.

naw...that's only when they're trying to get good benchmarks on 9xxx gpus...maybe they should try that on 9800gtx+++ to get it to beat a stock 4850.

updated the bios to the newest one, the ati still does not work (if I try the 2nd pci x16 slot I don't get the red lights but I still dont get a display) I tried an 8600gt that was in a media center and it worked in the 1st or 2nd pcie slot so I still dont have an answer, and to make things more confusing I am having trouble getting the 7800gtx or 4850 to line up properly in the top spot (my motherboard tray appears to have warped, which odly enough is not an issue for the 8600 but make the 7800gtx finicky and the 4850 not work at all, so I can't tell if its the mb/gpu combo or its the motherboard tray).
