AMD 4800+ Dual Core for gaming?

What would be the difference between the 4800 as compared to fx57 for gaming?

My thoughts are: Might not get use outta the 2nd core yet, but in future there may be apps or games that will

no contest 4800 .... all the other crap running in the background would do nothing to ur game and when multithreaded games come out .... forget about single core

FX-57 is still the definitive gaming chip; seeing as most games don't take advantage of dual-core, I don't see where you would have a big boost unless you have an obscene amount of processes running in the background. If you close up everything that isn't necessary before you start gaming, I don't think you'd see a noticeable difference between the FX-57 and the X2 4800+ unless you're running benchmarking software.

The real question should be whether you'll get much of an OC out of the FX 57.

Chances are decent that you can get that 4800 to 2.7-2.8, and if an FX 57 will only hit 2.9 or 3.0, than I'd definitely go w/ the 4800.

That's exactly the point they cost like the same amount of money but first of all 4800 has more overclocking capability, second of all everyone runs things in the background ... whether it be an antivirus, etc, etc.... sure fx57 would certainly be faster for just a single game running with absolutely nothing running in the background.... but everything else on ur comp would be faster esp if u multitask and also kernel mentioned he wants to have future flexibility

Who knows when multithreaded games are going to come out though, FX57 will totally crush an X2 4800 in single threaded applications like gaming. Dual core is completely useless unless you're doing a lot of multitasking like encoding movies in the background while playing a game. Having a few seperate processes in the background isn't enough to warrant the added processer. Get a singlethreaded CPU now and wait for higher X2s to come out.

kravmaga makes a good point; there's very little currently available that really takes advantage of multithreading. Wait for the prices to go down if you're thinking about getting a dual-core processor unless you've got techno-lust (like I do).

/knows it's smart to wait on dual-core processors
//getting one anyway
///damn my weak soul

it won't "crush" it at all ... 2.4 vs 2.8 isn't a huge enough difference to say it will crush it especially since u can overclock the 4800 to close to that range.... you never even need to exit any applications with an x2 really and unreal 2007 isn't that far off (a year and a half max).... i mean if the question is... i will be buying a new cpu in a year what should i buy now if all i will do is game? i would say fx-57.... but i don't think kernel wants to do that considering he was taklign about "future games"

Dual core is a waste of money if you're primarily a gamer. As a matter of fact Dual Core is a pain in the ass if you're a gamer because you constantly have to disable the 2nd core to run any games. Do a search. There are a few recent threads about this. I completely disagree with anyone that says Dual Core is worth it right now.

Muscles, i've seen similar threads, but apparently there is a dual core driver you're supposed to install.

i'm interested in the M2 socket, but jeeze....i don't know if i can wait another 8 months especially when i have the money now!

And if i buy somethng now, that's it.....i wouldn't be able to purchase an upgrade later. My wife would kill me for spending more than i already am planning on spending!

Press ctrl + alt + del right now, go to your task manager and look in the lower left hand corner at how many processer are running. That is the total number of background applications you're running. If you had dual core, you can make one core handle all the other processes and another core run just your game. Dual core is really worth it even if you only run single threaded applications due to the sheer number of single threaded aplications running.

Unless you are buying specifically for overclocking you'd be a fool to go with an FX57 over the 4800+

Look at the benchmarks in games. Yes, at STOCK settings an FX-57 will beat a stock 4800+ in ***LOW*** settings that are primarily CPU bound. (And even this won't be true when you OC your 4800+) No one with an FX-57 or 4800 is going to be gaming at 640x480

At HIGH settings they come out to be nearly identical, but with the 4800+ you get a whole 'nother core AND you can OC it very close to / equal to single-threaded FX57 performance in most/all applications.

Go dual core.

Also it's likely to be easier to get the 4800+ from 2.4 to 2.8 than it would be to take the FX-57 to 3.2

if you want gaming...I would recommend the FX57 instead of the X2 4800+

however if you do want something dual-core then X2 4800+ should be nice....the FX57 just edges out in game benches

So (especially after overclocking) for virtually no performance increase at typical resolutions you suggest giving up the second core ?

No way
