An E2200 pistol whips a x2 4200. If you overclock the margin only gets wider.
Still a good deal though if you already have an AM2 board.
I've had an Opteron 165 @ 2.4 GHz, and that got pushed aside for an E2200 @ 3.2 GHz, both at stock volts. The 165 was still adequate when replaced, but I wanted to upgrade my HTPC so I put it in there and got the 2200 for desktop use. Here are my thoughts:
For general use at stock speeds, both are fine, and probably unnoticeable w/o benchmarks. Gaming was more of the same, but I don't play the latest games that much, and I still have a 7900GT.
Once overclocked, the 2200 is by far superior. Because mine hit 3.2 Ghz, it really sped up my most processor-intensive tasks, like video transcoding. If you already have DDR2 memory, it's probably worth buying a cheap 2200 and a cheap P35-DS3L, pairing them, and having a pretty killer system for under $200.
However, in terms of pure value, it's near impossible to beat $40 for an X2-4200, especially if you already own an AM2 board.
This concludes my inconclusive post
