they perform the same. it's just that the opteron is made of higher quality and can overclock far better, statistically speaking. if you oc, get the 165. if you dont, get the x2. it's a simple as that.

I've been waiting for the opteron 165, but since the price has gone up I decided to get the x2 3800. Seems like now days the X2 3800 processor are doing some good overclocking. I got my CPU with the motherboard as a combo for $279 at Fry's this past week. Right now I'm doing 2.8ghz at 1.6 vcore and it's prime stable for 24hrs. I think the advantage of X2 3800 is the 10x multiplier. Other than the extra cache on the opteron. You'll never really see any difference in performance, especially if you're just playing games only. I go for X2 3800.

Depends on what motherboard and memory you have. Also if you can find a 165 at a decent price. For $297 at Newegg right now I would take the 3800.(Also my motherboard and memory would like the higher multiplier).

Edit-you beat me to it!

I'm likely going to go with the 3800 myself. I don't have much desire to overclock and I don't think the extra cache is worth the extra cash.

P.S. Anyone have pics of the retail hsf for the 3800? Are they using the new heatpipe design that comes with the opterons/toledo cores?

I have the X2 3800 and it is NOT the heat pipe design that the Opty comes with. It's the same ol standard unit...
