AMD 3600 vs 4000

On The Egg, they have the Brisbane 2600 1.9GHz for 69 and the 4000 2.1GHz for 99.99. That's a pretty big price jump for what i think is a pretty small cpu power gain. What do you guys think?

I'm probably gonna use this on an Asus M2N4-SLI board. I don't think i'll be overclocking this cpu, or upgrading this computer again any time soon, so i wanna get a cpu that will last me for a while, but don't wanna spend too much right now. So you think the .2GHz is worth 30 bucks? I was initially gonna get the 2.5GHz for $130, but that was before i saw the 1.9GHz for 69 bucks.

You can easily bump the FSB just a little on the 2600 to get 2.1 .. IMO, paying extra for the 4000 is a waste.

I know you say you don't want to overclock, but you can probably take the 2600 on up to 2.5 without a voltage change ..

You mean the Brisbane x2 3600 correct? As in the dual core part? For $69 that is a great deal, or you can get the 3800 for $76 too. Also the 4200 @ 2.2 is cheaper than the 4000@ 2.1 at $97 if you look closely enough. The 4200 at $28 more might be worth it in the long run, can't say though.

*edit the 4200 is cheaper because it is not a 65nm part, though there really isn't any big difference

if you're not planning on upgrading this rig for awhile, i dont know why you're getting an sli board. if you wanted high end i would expect you to sooner go with a C2D than SLI because anything less than an 8800 in SLI isn't worth the price of both cards and the premium for the SLI motherboard since there are higher end cards that can outrun them without being in sli. if you were planning on doing that with anything below 8800's, just get a cheaper board (tforce 550) and use the money you saved on the board plus the price of both cards to buy a single card. if you're planning on using 2 8800's in sli, you'll be severely bottlenecked by a ~2ghz a64 x2. IMO you should get the tforce 550 and x2 3600 and overclock (really not a big risk, and will easily make your rig last a lot longer) or just get c2d.

A retail tforce550 is $80, so i don't save that much. Also, eventhough the Asus board i picked out is SLI, it only has 1 PCI 16x slot. From my understanding, SLI is when i use 2 video cards that are running on PCI 16x, and it just shares the bandwidth between the 2 slots. But if i only have one PCI 16x (and i plan on gettting a Hauppage PVR-150 tv tuner card anyways, which is just a PCI card), then i don't really care about the SLI. Right?

Also, do you think if i get the Brisbane 3600+ 1.9GHz, that i can overclock it to maybe 2.1GHz or even 2.2 or 2.3 without having any extra special cooling or anything?

yeh, i was looking only at the Brisbane x2 65nm chips.
