Could somebody help a noob here?

I've got AMD64 3000+ Winchester core
2x512 Kingston HyperX CL2

Help ne overclock this baby please

CPU is running at stock speed of 1.81 ghz atm, I want to get it higher, possibly at 2.4 ghz

My memory timings are: 2.3.2.6.2 as referenced on the kingston site for this memory, dual channel 400 mhz CL2

I've tried to read tutorials for overclocking, but somehow I am still not confident to do it my self yet.

So any help would be appreciated

what timings to set, what htt frequency, multiplyer, and so on

thanks in advance

I use this motherboard in my system, it's a nice, cheap, stable board. I'd recommend that you take a look at the overclocking guides here and at www.dfi-street.com (search for them).

Specifically read in the ASUS A8N5X manual the following pages: 2-21 and 2-22; 2-28 and 2-29.

Some specific things under the "Advanced" menu in the BIOS: in the "Jumperfree Configuration" change "overclock profile" to "manual" from "auto". This will unlock a lot of the options for you to tweak.

In "Advanced" menu, "CPU Configuration" take a look at the "Hyper Transport Frequency" - this is set to auto and the value of 5x by default - this is the multiplier (often refered to as LDR) applied to your HTT (which is set in "Advanced" menu, "Jumperfree Configuration" then "CPU Frequency").

In "Advanced" menu, "CPU Configuration", "DRAM Configuration" take a look at "MAX Mem clock" - this is where you set your memory dividers (400, 333, 266, 200 I believe are your options).

In "Advanced" menu, "CPU Configuration" disable "Cool and Quiet" if you drop your CPU clock multiplier below stock (yours should be 9X stock).

In "Advanced" menu, "Jumperfree Configuration", "CPU Frequency" - this is the "HTT" - increment it slowly and test to ensure stability.

There are a number of guides around that will tell you how to approach manipulating the values above, but that's where the important knobs to twist are in the A8N5X BIOS. Read those pages above and you'll be all set to start experimenting. Download a copy of CPU-Z and use it to see the changes you are making - IE - run CPU-Z stock and check the values for CPU and memory. Change the HTT to 201 in the BIOS and reboot - run CPU-Z again and look at CPU and memory tabs and you'll start to get a hang for the relationship of the elements in the above list. Grab a copy of Prime95 to check for stability with - all the details are in the guides floating around - much better than I've got in this post - I'm still learning myself and trying to help you out.

Good luck.

is there any way of overclocking the cpu while keeping the ram at stock 400mhz without a memory divider?

A winchester can go upto 2.6-2.7 depending upon stepping?

that all depends on your memory.

I have transcend 1gb X 2, how does it depend upon memory if I want to keep the memory on stock, preferably through the bios?

can somebody give me a starter's pack? a modest oc for now, just tell me what and how much I should raise for now, say 2.2 oc e.g.? what should I set to what and what should be enabled, disabled, etc, I would really appreciate it

wolfman you say you have the sam mb, so say 2.2 or 2.4 oc, what should I set in bios, and I'll go from there

tomorrow I am getting an extra 2x512 dual channel kingston cl2 like what I already have, which will sum up to 4x512 MB

Not a great idea to throw in 4 sticks. You will have a harder time overclocking as well as running command rate at 1T. Also, there's a likelihood the memory will run DDR333.

However, if Asus has a forum, it will definitely have some overclocking guides. Abit-USA forums sure do.

ok,with a help of a friend I overclocked it to 2.4 hgz
I set my memory at 333 mhz, HT to 266 x 4 and voltage to 1.475 and it works pretty good so far

Memory timings are 2.3.2.6.1 and my temp at idle is about 35 up to 46-47 while playing games etc...

Is this ok or I could get something better out of it?

600mhz overclock = 33% nothing to be unhappy with there. You'll have to check if you feel comfortable pushing for more...but that's a nice clock right there. Maybe would be a good idea to run a Prime95 loop for 8 hours or so and ensure your CPU is stable there?

Glad you were able to get moving on your overclock...

Now I've got a problem :)

I stuck in additional 2x512 ram and it doesnt work on 1T anymore, so I have 4x512 Kingston HyperX DDR400 CL2, and with 2 sticks it works very well, but with 4 sticks, it wont even boot up to win, I am having to reset bios everytime I set it to 1T

Also, I am now not being able to get 2.4 GHz, it doesnt work as before when I had 2 sticks of ram, the most I got out of it is 2.2, so can somebody please help out figure this out? I really don't want to loose additional 1 gig of ram since my bf 2 has been performing very well with 2 gb of ram, with 1 sticks of ram and 2.4 ghz, I was able to get out about 6500mbps in sandra, but now with 4 sticks and 2.2 I can barely get 5500mbps

edit

to pint out, the memory sticks are the same, same model, just one pair has been made in week 53 2005 and second pair in week 17 2006

Winchester can only work at 2t with all 4 banks used, its the spec.
2.2Ghz is really good.

is there a way to improve memory bandwidth with 2T settings? I just ran sandra and mem bandwidth is about 4500mbps 71% efficiency, whereas, when I had 2x512 on 1T, it was 6500mbps with 91% efficiency

I really like having the 2 gig ram, since it performs really well with battlefield 2

but if I cannot get it any better with 2 gb, I will get rid of it :(

Sandra is a synthetic benchmark which doesn't mean much. Real world benchmarks are more important. 2T is more than ok.

There was a post a while ago comparing real world 2T performance to 1T, and there was just about no noticeable difference.

I have a winchester 3000+ overclocked to 2.45ghz, and I've been running it like this with 4 sticks of 512mb ram (at 2T command rate) for nearly a year, and my computer is quite fast. When I switched from 2 sticks to 4 (and consequently had my command rate drop from 1T to 2T), I didn't notice any performance drop, only a gain in speed due to the extra ram.

CheesePoofs. what are your timing s for memory, and what are your frequencies set to and voltage?
