hey can someone tell me the difference between the AMD Athlon XP 2700+ and the AMD Athlon XP 2800? it says 2700+ runs at 2.17ghz and the 2800 runs at 2.08ghz. another diff is that 2700+ has 333MHz FSB while the 2800 has 512MHz FSB.

I want to know if there are any major differences as to why i should choose the 2800 over the 2700?

The 2800+ is a newer core, for starters. Second, it's also a 333MHz front side bus (DDR166), but it's also packing 512Kb of L2 cache to supplement its standard 128Kb of L1... I'm planning on putting a 2800+ in my upgraded box, and if you can find one for cheap, grab it. The 2700+ might compare if you need pure computational power, but that's always fixable with a conservative overclock. :)

xp2500+ are reportedly locked if they are made after the 39th week this year. I very recently got a 2500+ from Monarch that was week 20 for $82. Unlocked. No guarantees for others, but I'm tickled.

I'd choose the 2800 over the 2700. Even if locked, the Bartons probably can be adjusted to a higher FSB, like 200. 2800 is a Barton, 2700 is not.

I had a 2700+, and it ran at 11.5x200fsb with no problems whatsoever. But I then went all the way to the 3000+ rather than the 2800+ for the extra 256k of cache, with the same default clockspeed as the 2700+.

One more thing that nobody else mentioned: the 2800 (all Bartons) have SSE2, which really helps if you plan on doing any video encoding. So why not buy a new 2600 Barton, then overclock it slightly, to 2.2 Ghz or so? You would save $40, while getting much better performance than you would get with a XP 2800+.

hey guys i am pretty new at this whole fixing computer stuff. i know what overclocking is, but i don't know anything about how to do it. can someone tell me how and btw, i already ordered the 2800 so i was wondering if anyone knew how to overclock it. if so please tell me how. thanks!

Okay, OCing is either raising the fsb (front side bus), raising the multiplier, or both. Usually, the reason that someone wants an "unlocked" chip is so they can lower the multiplier, so they that they can take advantage of an even higher fsb, which results in even higher performance than just raising the multiplier.

Some may want to raise the Multilplier b/c their memory, their mobo, or some combination of the parts in it won't allow for faster fsb's. I qualify under the previous category though, I have a 2400+ running @ 216mhz (ddr432), clock multiplier of 10, with my ram at the same speed.

Sorry myocardia, the only Athlons with SSE2 are the AMD64s. Bartons and below have SSE and 3DNow! only.

Actually that is incorrect. All Athlon XP processors have SSE not SSE2. Athlon 64/FX/Opteron have SSE2 support. Check the processor detail with Sandra an you will exactly what it does support Or you can read through AMD's whitepaper on The Athlon XP Processors. AMD Athlon XP whitepaper link
