Hi! I am new here and I have a quick question. Hope someone can help me here.

This afternoon, I turned on my amd 2700 computer and then after a few hours it froze, so I did a reboot. After the reboot the computer won't start any more. It turns on but it doesn't do anything else. The CPU fan is spinning and the power supply seems to be ok. I decided to take out the heat sink to take a look and reinsert the CPU and the heat sink. It still won't boot. Can anyone help me. I even cleaned the cpu and heat sink with a Q-tip.

I hope someone here can help me boot my computer again. I think it's the CPU that is keeping me from booting my computer.

P.S. The motherboard is a KT600-A. It's the combo that I got a Fry's.

clear the cmos then try to boot. was everything at stock fsb and voltages? consult your mobo manual to find your cmos jumpers its a quick and easy operation, it basically wipes the bios clear and restores it to default bios settings.

i tried taking out the cmos battery and still it wont boot.

I bought the 2700 combo at fries. it's using a kt600-A motherboard, and 512mb pc3200 of legacy electronics ram.

the fsb is at stock and so is the voltage

anymore ideas? thank you for your time

Really, this is a tough one to diagnose. Only things I can think of to try is:

* Double-check that the RESET button isn't stuck. If it is, well, unstick it.

* Disconnect your hard drive and boot the comp. If it POSTs, replace the hard drive.

* Remove the graphics card and boot the comp. If it POSTs, replace the graphics card.

Were you using a thermal interface on that CPU? What kind of power supply are you using (Brand, watts)?

Describe exactly what the computer does when you push the power button. (any lights, beeps, hard drive or CDROMs spin up?) Without a more detailed description of the symptoms, it's hard to diagnose.

I doubt it's the CPU, unless you were not using a TIM with it. My best guess would be the motherboard gave out. I had a couple motherboards give up the smoke, and the computer would 'turn on' but nothing would appear on the screen, no beeps either.

Check the capacitors on the motherboard to see if there are any that are bulging, leaking, or discolored on top or at the bottom.

try to smell the vent on the power supply. If it has a burnt smell than most likely its dead even though its spinning. Thats what happen to my antec PS.

when i push the power button, it doesn't beep and the cd rom lights up.
the cpu fan spins and power supply seems to be giving power to all the components.
i tried taking out the cpu and reseat it. i also did the same to the heat sink and added thermal grease too.

so when i power on, the power supply gives power, cpu fan spins and that's about it. i tried resetting the cmos and took the battery out too. no go.

i think i have a defective 2700 cpu.

The cpu doesn't look right in the photos: the surface of the packaging (the green part) should be smooth, and it doesn't appear to be. If it is the cpu, then you need to figure out how it was damaged and fix that issue so you don't burn the new cpu out also.

chances are that the chip is fried due to some sort of electrical surge. this has happened to me but with my p4 and i had to reset it and get a new powersupply. hopefully u can get a new one. or if it is still under worrenty u can send it back iin and receive a brand new one for free from amd

good luck
