Just bought this combo at Fry's Electronic in San Jose, the paperwork they give you says thornton, I know there is something about enabling this chip to run with 512 cache, well, thats not my story, I'm running this chip currently at 11.5 x 200 or 2300. It has ran Prime 95 for about 2 hours. Hope it keeps it up.

What's the PLU# on your receipt for the Thorton core? I don't want to stand there asking the cashier to go back and forth bringing me CPUs until I get the right one.

Here is the issue, when I went there(san jose) they currently did not have the mobo, they ended up giving me the same K7VTA3 REV 8C, I dont know what K7VTA3 rev 8c is, anyway I dont care about the mobo, I just wanted the cpu, on my receipt cpu number is 15578 and mobo 3863677.

Thanks for the info, elnicoya100. Going there now to get it and I hope I get a Thorton that is unlocked.

sorry but the picture from the website does not look like my new cpu, that picture looks like my regular T-bred.

This thing is still running strong at 11.5 x 200= 2300
here are my system specs:
Asus a7n8x rev 1.6 with the latest bios
Genetic 350watt power supply
3200 genetic ram(Legacy) 512MB
raid 0 160gb ibm hard drive
Global Win copper fan 5500rpm
52x TDK CD recorder
External Sony dvd+/r recorder
Geforce TI 4200

Awesome CPU, I wish I could see a better picture or review to enable the extra 256 cache, the one that the previous member pointed out to, does not look like my cpu....and I think it is a thorton since when I run wcpuid it says model 10, cpu stepping is AQXEA 0334

The article on X-bit labs' site is not exactly the same as the original article on overclock.ru, but at least you do not have to bother with online translation tools.

Other than the fact that it cost about $30 as part of the 2000+/ECS combo. You can turn it into a Barton with a pencil and then up the multiplier so that it runs at 2.2ghz. Thus getting a Barton 2800+ for $30. Other than that it isn't special at all.

I keep waiting for Fry's to bust out another 2500+ combo. I need to upgrade my T-Bird 900 over winter break.

It will come out, I bought a couple of those last week, they had the combo package for $94.99 but the sad news they were lousy overclockers. This chip I just got 2200+ is running at 11.5 x 200=2300. Good Luck!

thorton is a barton with the extra 256kb L2 burned out, you can reactivate the L2 turning into a barton with some conductive material, like solder, but I'm too afraid to so I leave mine as is, the thorton is a RECTANGULAR shape, instead of the square shape, so look for that!

Dude, have no fear. It's easy. Just run a pencil over the hole a few times. Wipe off the excess and you're Bartonized.

Exactly. Just fill in the whole at L2. You can't miss it. You don't really have to fill it in. Mine was filled in until I blew and wiped off the excess. There's clearly a whole there still but I guess there's enough of a layer of grapite to do the job. SANDRA says there's a full 512KB of cache instead of 256.
