AMD 1700+ - getting 54 C idle - too hot?

I swapped out my AMD 1600+ for a friend's AMD 1700+ - and the temps have jumped about 4 degrees!
I'm not overclocking, and my system specs are as follows:

Epox 8KHA+ motherboard
AMD 1700+ XP CPU
Alpha 8045 heatsink with 32cfm Panaflo 80mm fan
512 Samsung PC2100 DDR memory
GeForce 2 Ti500 vid card
WD 120gb special edition
Evercase E4252 midtower - one panaflo 24CFM intake, one Vantec 27cfm outtake
Sparkle 350w PSU - swapped original fan with a Panaflo 24cfm

Before the CPU swap, with all the same sysem components, I was averaging about 50C for cpu temp, 24C for case temp. All my readings have been through Motherboard Monitor 5 and the system display at bootup.

Now, without overclocking anything, the temps are in the mid 50s, and it seems my systems is a lot more unstable. Curiously, my case temp is only about 26C temp, which seems fairly cool to me.

Also, I just cleaned out the entire system, removing all dust from fans, etc, using a fresh layer of Artic Silver 3. At this point, I'm lost as to what might be causing this temperature jump. Even when I was overclocking the 1600+ to 1800+ the temps still stayed around 50C.

If you guys can offer any insight or advice on why the temps are so high, or even any solutions that could lower my temps, that'd be mucho appreciated.

Thanks!

Those are extremely high temps, in the category of "It's a miracle if it doesn't crash."

What kinda TIM are you using? Generic goop or something?... you are right, those case temps are on the cool side, which always helps your cpu temps.

TIM? I'm guessing you're referring to the thermal paste - I'm using Artic Silver 3. Fresh batch too - just bought it recently from SVC Compucycle.

So, I'm pretty much lost on what else to check out. I might remove and reinstall the heatsink again - maybe something's out of place or is interferring with the cooling process in between.

mid 50 ain't that bad. I was doing mid 50's with my swifty and a 48cfm fan.

try to get your 1600xp back.

maybe add a stronger fan?

Perhaps you didnt put the HS on correctly, and made an air bubble? That has happened to me before... 3C difference after i replaced the HS. I cleaned off chip \ HS with acetone and reapplied a REALLY thin layer. Back to normal temps....

You might want to double-check all of the fasteners involved in the 8045. If the motherboard standoffs aren't snugged against the board, you would get uneven pressure against the CPU. Also, I would go with three plastic washers per springbolt for the extra compression, and make sure they're all bottomed out in the standoffs.

BTW, your friend didn't do a voltage mod to the bridges of his 1700+, did he? If it's been bumped to a higher voltage, that could explain it too.

Sounds good to me so far - I was planning on reattaching the 8045 heatsink anyways, and this time around, I'll pay more attention to the plastic washers and any possibility of the heat bubble. Also, I didn't clean off the 8045 bottom copper part with acetone before I applied a fresh layer of Artic Silver 3, so that could be causing some chemical imbalance.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! If anyone has had similar experiences and can offer solutions, I'm welcome to hearing all of them!

Thanks again!

Bah, mid 50s, that's nothing. AthlonXp operates upto 90 or something like that. Personally, my Agoia core 1600+ XP running at 1.75ghz ( that's a little over 2100+ speeds, overclocked bus to 166mhz with 2700 ddr ram) is idling around 47 degrees and at full load can easily reach 55 degrees, my case temp is around 33 degrees. I have one outtake fan running below PSU, one exhaust fan on PSU, and volcano 9 with arctic silver 3 (it has 80mm thermaltlake fan) spinning between 2500 - 3000 rpm on CPU. I could go to a lot faster RPM on volcano 9 where it moves like 75+ cfm but then at 5000rpm it sounds like a freaking jet. I set it to where I can bear the noise. I'm thinking of lowering rpm on it even more. hell, I don't care if my CPU temp will go up a few degrees more, as long as it's stable and doesn't crash I'm all for a bit quieter PC.

I've been running my XP1700+ for the last week under constant load (SETI), 24hrs a day with temps around 55-59 degrees. Hasn't crashed yet and I don't expect it to so don't worry so much about your temps. I only have two fans in my system; a PanafloL1A on my SVC GC68 and a PC&C Silencer in my PSU. I still think it's a bit loud tho. I'm thinking about switching the panaflo with a 120mm papst running at 7V. I want the thing to be as quiet as mu friend's dell. However, it's still great being able to sleep with the computer on in my room.
