AMD 1.1 fried cpu?

I just bought a "barebones" system from the computer show today here in Memphis, TN. It has a PcChips M825 mother board and I believe the proc is a 1.1ghz AMD Athalon TB (is that ThunderBird?). When I brought it home, plugged up my HD, CD, and Floppy; then booted, I noticed an unusual smell followed by smoke comming from the open case (glad it was open!). Immediately pulled the plug to find that the wires that connect the front mounted USB ports were grounded to the case and melting quickly. After they cooled, I unplugged them from the motherboard and attempted to proceed with installation of WinXP Pro. It gave me the BSOD with a message to turn of Caching and try again. Still nothing. On to my old Win98SE disk. Loaded halfway and has errors.
Then to Linux. Begins to load.... then:
CPU0 machine Exemption.00000004 (not sure on the 0's)
Bank (lots of zeros)
Bank (lots of zeros)
Kernel Panic CPU context corrupt

-Reboots

Does this sound like a fried CPU? I need to know tonight as the show ends tomorow (Sunday 07-06-03) and I want to take this back before it's too late.
In the mean time I will be swapping RAM, HD and other stuff to see if that is causing the error.

Thanks,
fireman

could be bad memory, swap it out with known good ones and see. burn smell no good. if that no workie, take out heatsink and apply your own thermal grease
