Ambien vs. Sonata vs. Lunesta

Haven't tried Lunesta. Tried Sonata, didn't work very well for me. Just made me drowsy, but didn't have a good knockout punch (I have a hard time falling asleep, no problems staying asleep.)

Ambien works great for me. Watch out for the psychedelic and blackout effects though. And if you take it for several successive nights you gradually start to build up a bit of a tolerance to its effects. I only take it sporadically so it's perfect.

Wonder if anyone DID try all of them at once... would it kill you or put you in month-long coma?

i've been thinking about approaching this topic w/ my dr again... Last time i was there he suggested Nyquil or Dimetap, but neither of those have enough power to make me fall asleep, my biggest problem. Once I am asleep I am fine, its just getting to sleep thats tricky for me.

I've been using Melatonin, but i absolutely hate a few things about it. 1) I have the STRANGEST dreams on it, like really really weird and 2) I am so damn groggy when i get up, i really notice the difference...

I feel awkward asking again though...

i imagine putting all three can wreck havoc on your insides, but I don't know what each is made of/how they would interact.

though if the OP is volunteering....

My wife has tried lunesta and ambien. For her, they work the same but lunesta leaves a terrible taste in your mouth (she says the butterfly on the commercial flies in at night and craps in your mouth).

Unless you've got a tolerance, my guess is it would kill most of us.

Lunesta leaves a taste that's similar to chewing aspirin, but worse, starting shortly after you take it and lasts for nearly 24 hours. The bad taste is worse when you eat or drink. It does, however, make you sleep through the night. Unless you're in pain. Neither Lunesta nor Sonata has helped me sleep at all since I injured my back a month ago. I'm on something really nasty to sleep right now (a benzodiazopine) and am anxious to stop taking it. Haven't tried Ambien.

For me, plain old Benadryl works wonders. I popped two of those yesterday after doing some demo in the basement because all the dust was making me itch, best night of sleep Ive had in quite a long time.

I've tried Lunesta and Ambien as well. Lunesta does make everything taste poisonous for a day or so after you take it. Water is especially gross.

Ambien is good, but since it's closely related to benzo's, it kills your memory. Also, with Ambien, if you don't lie down right away after you take it, it doesn't really help you sleep anymore. I've taken as many as 7 or 8 in a night and still stayed awake. It also makes you(read: me) a terrible driver :( Though, Lunesta doesn't help driving either.

i have tried Ambien and Lunesta. Ambien made me feel hung over in the morning. Lunesta is awesome, i only take 1/2 a pill and that is enough to put me in dreamland in about 20 minutes. no hung over feeling and absoute deep blissful sleep. i love lunesta. I tried another it starts with a R but man that was nasty, i felt light headed, very unbalanced and just plain weird. i had 6 samples of that one and flushed the other 5.

I have never had any experiences with a bad taste from lunesta and i have been taking it for about a year now.

I have tried Ambien and it does nothing for me. Doesnt put me to sleep, doesnt give me the memory loss thing...nothing.

Lunesta on the other hand knocks me out pretty good. I have been taking it for a little more than a year with no ill effects, although I have noticed one 3 mg pill no longer has the same heavy hitting effects. I would better equate the taste Lunesta leaves as a sort of metallic taste, but for me it only lasts until I zonk out. I never notice it any other time.

I am going to ask my Doc about trying out Rozerem and see how that goes.

I've used both Ambien and Lunesta and neither did much for me. I'm not too surprised considering how fried my brain is from lack of sleep. It just doesn't respond to medications in general anymore. It's not like I took the stuff regularly.
I never noticed any weird tastes or anything.

Alcohol and drugs will put you to sleep, deeper, longer, and isn't usually habit forming because it's a one and done

Are doctors hesitant to prescribe these things?

I am 30 and have recently begun having issues waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back asleep. I've tried OTC but they don't really help. Just curious if I need to be ready to persuade when I go to the doc.

I've taken Ambien and Sonata. Both don't really work for me at all. Ambien did make one of my friends hallucinate pretty badly though.

If I really want to fall asleep, I just pop a couple codeine. Yeah, they do have caffeine in them but it helps me relax and that's the only reason I don't fall asleep. A couple drinks will do the same thing but it takes more time to drink them and they're unneeded calories.

Mine wasn't, but I've been an insomniac for years and he was horrified that I was taking diphenhydramine (benadryl) because it farks up your sleep even though it helps you go to sleep. He said something about messing with some stage or keeping you from a certain stage of sleep or something.

Depends on the doctor. Many will give them out like candy...

Never tried the others but Xanax sure works for me. Wish I had some for the times I can't sleep, which thankfully isn't too often.

Don’t drive on the stuff! Big mistake. What was it like taking that many?
