and do you need to get a priscription for it?

I have a hard time sleeping. I would only get 4-5 hours a sleep because I would be up all night tossing and turning with my mind not wanting to rest. Then when i go to work feeling tired and unproductive i would come back home thinking i would sleep well but no, still tossing and turning til the morning hours. So I'm sure theres something wrong with me.

I used to take over the counter sleeping pills but they just made me tired throughout the whole day and the only thing that worked well was nyquil.

That's the one where diarrhea is listed as a potential side-effect. Seems like a pretty bad side-effect for a sleeping pill :D

Bottle of NyQuil and a few beers does the trick as well... No RX needed...

Sounds like a recipe for a bed full of diarrhea to me.

Nyquil works good for me. Although I have tried Ambien and it works, but be prepared to go through hell if you don't fall asleep quickly!

warm whiskey will help too. Ever thought about trying to burn more energy during the day so your body will be more eager to take the sleep when it can?

believe it or not, drinking before you go to bed, produces fragmented sleep. i would definately go to a sleep doctor. i was diagnosed with sleep apnea, and after a couple of month of being on CPAP, i fall asleep between 5-20 mins.

That sounds awesome. Why do they make Sleeping aides that do this when they have others that dont make bad side effects? So Ambien isnt all that great?

Yes I also heard sleeping with alcohol in your system doesnt produce quality sleep and thats why I want an alternative than Nyquil which im taking everyday right now. I'm thinking about seeing a doctor. Do you need a prescription for Ambien?

my wife hallucinated

funny as hell.

i tried a couple of them, my mind was still restless so i wound up in bed, something akin to immobiile, and awake.

it gave me hangovers as well, though she never experienced that. i find i sleep better when ive had some reefer, but i hate smoking and have only done it a few times.

ambien is awesome... i've only experienced the hallucination once.. just for a brief second i thought i saw something out of the corner of my eye..

nevertheless, you have to have a good 8 hours of sleep when you take it, otherwise you wake up feeling very groggy.

the first time i took it, when I woke up, i felt like a brand new person.

lol that'll make you nod out

here is the answer to your problem: Valerian root..(sp?) anyway.. you can buy the actual root and make tea from it; or you can buy the Extract which comes in a pill and also works great.. my suggestion though is to get the Extract with the Lemon bomb in it b/c the regular one smells horrible.. i mean horrible.. and you burp that taste for a while. But it works great and is OTC so you shouldn't have a problem buying it. It makes you really tired

It was such an odd feeling i made sure i went to bed <1 hour after taking one from then on. If you sleep >6 hours after taking one (no idea why you would take more than 1) you should not wake up with any adverse effects, but i guess everyone's metabolism is different.

Ambien works pretty good to get you to sleep. Take it and hit the sack. You should be asleep within 30 minutes. If much more than 30 minutes pass, your screwed, at least I was.
I take Ambien CR now. It is a time release pill. It helps me get to sleep and sleep thru the night.
I also agree with going to see a sleep Dr.
Apnea will shorten your life, and make you feel tired during that shortened life!

Bah... there are a few important issues that have not been covered here yet.

1. Some meds make you sleepy for a long time ? sometimes this is good, and sometimes this is bad.
2. Some make you sleepy for a short time ? sometimes this is good, and sometimes this is bad.
3. Some make you sleepy, but the sleep you get, does not refresh you because it interferes with some of the normal sleep processes.

Alcohol problem #3

Benzodiazepines problem #3 and (#1 or #2 see the list to se if they are long or short acting)
triazolam (Halcion®) - 2 hours
midazolam (Versed®, Hypnovel®) - 3 hours (1.8-6 hours)
oxazepam (Serax®) - 4-15 hours
chlordiazepoxide (Librium®) - 5-25 hours
alprazolam (Xanax®) - 6-12 hours
temazepam (Restoril®) 8-20 hours
lorazepam (Ativan®) 10-20 hours
bromazepam (Lexotan®) 10-20 hours
estazolam (ProSom®) 10-24 hours
flunitrazepam (Rohypnol®) 18-26 hours. Withdrawn from the market in some countries; considered a "date-rape drug"
clonazepam (Klonopin®, Rivotril®) 18-50 hours
nitrazepam (Mogadon®) 20-40 hours
quazepam (Doral®) 25-100 hours
clorazepate (Tranxene®) 36-100 hours
medazepam (Nobrium®) 36-150 hours
prazepam (Centrax®) 36-200 hours
diazepam (Valium®) 36-200 hours
flurazepam (Dalmane®) 40-250 hours

Ambien and Sonata are extremely short acting so you are not under their effects in the morning.
The disadvantage is they won?t keep you asleep if you are not tired, so you wake up once they wear off.
