Listened to this podcast and wow, at the revelations. I'd intentionally ignored most of the noise about this at the time, it was pretty gross how publicly the whole thing played out and it clearly had become mob mentality and all the people I saw discussing it were gross incel like douchebags, and general assholes. But I also had some people I normally view as insightful and thoughtful saying bizarre fucked up stuff. And then the awful memes which just showed people will never change and will always just be awful (like when people were celebrating a suffering alcoholic by laughing up the megapint shit). If the genders had been flipped there's no way a woman would have ever won a case while gloating and simultaneously trying to play a victim like Depp did. Hell, they claimed she wasn't acting enough of a victim as it was and she had actual evidence of the abuse.
I think one of the more interesting parts, was how they used social media, with a relatively small number of, what had prior, been nothing special dipshits on YouTube, and how the pro-Johnny Depp social media accounts were intentionally seeding manipulated evidence to win the court of public opinion. Also, his lawyer buddy, that was helping Russian oligarchs (including as part of the 2016 election), among other fucked up stuff. I honestly don't know how that guy hasn't been picked up by Turmp yet, he'd be a perfect fit.
One of the really bizarre parts is the situation with the kid in Florida that killed a mother and her baby after losing control of his car while street racing and how they got people on social media claiming all sorts of crazy shit (that he "confessed to a crime he didn't commit" which he doesn't even dispute what happened and he's uncomfortable about the stuff these people say about him on social media; and it gets more and more gross from there like people smearing the woman he killed claiming she was drunk and a bunch of other despicable shit). Between how these shitheads being able to sway large groups of people with this stuff, and the billionaire that was paying for surveillance on college students and protestors to try to ruin their lives, people really need to wake up to the world we already live in. This isn't the future, this stuff is already happening.
Because of this, apparently Depp is now becoming best buds with MBS and thinks he got unfairly maligned over murdering Khashoggi, just like Johnny got unfairly maligned for abusing Amber. If that doesn't tell you the nature of his character, I don't know what would.
Somewhat tangentally related, but highlights the crazy stuff going on, there were a couple of episodes of Darknet Diaries, where an Israeli firm hired a private investigator in NYC to tail first Ronan Farrow (because the Israelis were trying to smear the victims of Harvey Weinstein), and then a security researcher (that was digging into Pegasus - which was the tool used by Saudi Arabia to hack Khashoggi's family's phones). The tools that the wealthy have at their disposal should scare the hell out of people.
