Amber Alert in Toronto

Ontario police call off Amber Alert
Last Updated Tue, 21 Oct 2003 11:57:06
TORONTO - Ontario Provincial Police on Tuesday called off the provincewide alert about the abduction of a nine-year-old Toronto girl.

Cecilia Zhang

Toronto police, meanwhile, were going door to door canvassing in the neighbourhood of Cecilia Zhang, who investigators believe was abducted from her home.

Toronto police Staff Insp. Mike Farrar said police were searching in a two-kilometre radius of the girl's home. He pointed out that a nearby ravine contains terrain that is like "deep country."

Local police want to keep the Amber Alert active within Toronto, while they search for signs of the girl, who was reported missing early Monday morning.

"The efforts of the Toronto Police Service will continue," said Sgt. Jim Muscat.

The Grade 4 student disappeared from her bedroom Monday morning. Police say they have evidence the house may have been broken into.

At a news briefing held shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Jim Muscat said police officers were conducting a grid search of the neighbourhood by foot, on bicycles and all-terrain vehicles. He said members of the force's marine unit were searching ponds.

"We are sparing no resources or expense to find Cecilia and bring her home," he said.

They have even recovered trash from a garbage transfer site, hoping to find clues amid the rubbish.

When asked if Cecilia's disappearance was being treated as a stranger abduction, Muscat said: "It's an abduction. I'm not in the position to specifically articulate what kind. But it's an abduction."

Muscat urged people in the area to look in their back yards, and to report any suspicious discoveries to police.

Muscat also read a brief statement from Cecilia's parents, pleading for her safe return.

"To whoever has Cecilia, please return her home safely. Please drop her off at a safe location so the police can bring her home," Muscat said.

The missing girl has black hair with blond highlights. She lives with her parents and grandparents. Police have questioned tenants of a basement apartment.

The provincewide Amber Alert issued on Monday sent a description of the girl across Ontario, and activated highway signs alerting motorists about the abduction.

Several police departments are involved in the search, including the sex crimes unit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Toronto Police at 416-808-3390.

Why would they call it off when they believe it to be an abduction?

Well Amber alert is sort of all men available work on this....however after x amount of time they have found it pointless.....however they still look.

The thing is I don't understand how a window was broken and the girl taken without the parents knowing. If a stranger came into a 9 year old's room I'd imagine them screaming regardless of being told I will shoot you or whatever.

My concern is only $1000 reward.
