I mean, really? a digital version is more expensive than a physical copy + shipping?

assuming you don't mind waiting the 1-2 days for free prime shipping, where's the incentive to buy the kindle version of books at all?

it's kinda sad... I was one of the biggest kindle fanboys, but I don't think I've turned mine on in like 3 months (and it's not because I'm not reading)

I agree.

Though from what I understand, it's the publishers that set the pricing timetable and Amazon has to go along with it.

It's a "complicated" pricing formula which is why the price will vary from day to day.

Basically, it's the publishers that are being aholes and trying to milk the price due to the Kindle's popularity.

My suggestion to you is to get an ePUB reader like the Nook and "rent" books from your local library....

I've found so many free books for my Nook that I haven't even needed to pay for anything yet. I think right now the ebook pricing is just going along with demand. There was a huge surge in sales of readers when the Kindle and Nook drooped their prices and came out with a wifi only version. I think they'll start dwindling over the next year.

Why are there 4 different pricing for the audio books? the format description is same, but price range from 16.49 to 54.43... WTF... not that I give a flying crap about it, but still, WTF?

I like the Kindle store a lot (I have a Kindle, but do most of my reading on my phone because of convenience), but the prices are definitely weird sometimes.

Welcome to the digital future.
Same thing applies to games (Steam), and movie rentals (online vs Redbox for example).

The only thing that seems to have become cheaper is music.

It's the publishers. They started withholding books until Amazon agreed to let them set the pricing.

I would think that over-pricing electronic copies of books is a false economy since it encourages people to illegally download the books instead, especially if it is obvious the consumer is being ripped-off (how can the publishers justify the electronic copy being more expensive than the hard copy?). Therefore the publisher's bottom line is affected, they have to increase prices to make up the difference and it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.

In addition, presumably the current mentality that the publishers have of screwing the consumer for short-term profits is to the detriment of the long-term popularity of eBooks?
