Amazon's Lumberyard. Yet another CryEngine fork.

Hmm. Lumberyard is a kinda dumb name for an engine. Makes me think of the word lumbering which is defined as "moving in a slow, heavy, awkward way" which is definitely not what you want from a game engine.

Q. What is Amazon Lumberyard?
Amazon Lumberyard is a free AAA game engine deeply integrated with AWS and Twitch – with full source code provided.

Is that different than open source?

Why yes, yes it is.

Q. Is Lumberyard “open source”?
No. We make the source code available to enable you to fully customize your game, but your rights are limited by the Lumberyard Service Terms. For example, you may not publicly release the Lumberyard engine source code, or use it to release your own game engine.

It reminds me of "framework", which is a collection of foundational code that makes programming easier. Kind of a weird name. I'm happy to see more options for gaming programmers. I worked with Unity a little bit and it was fun to plug away at, but could still use a lot of optimizations.

Maybe it's called Lumberyard because you head to a lumber yard to buy lumber to build shit...
It has everything you need to start your build.

Yea, its odd that they would not call it fire something given all the fire branding, but also a semi funny aside, they have all this fire branding and name the engine lumberyard, are they not worried it will burn down? ....... (yes, yes, bad dad joke.... have not had coffee yet)

I think it's cool they released this. Looks like killer graphics, though that's all I can see at this point.

Kind of sucks we won't see any games using this, if I understand the terms correctly. So it's just for people to mess around with? Still, like I said, I think it's cool that at least they did that.

People can release games, they just can't release forks of the engine. Thus why it is not open-source.

You can certainly make games with it, and I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon bakes this engine in with some of their hardware.
