Not a bad deal, but I'm not sure I would want an obsolete reader. Although, I believe the differences between the Kindle 2 and 3 were relatively minor.

Its a little smaller, has more onboard storage, has a slightly faster refresh rate, is a little lighter, and more contrast on the screen I think. Oh, and WiFi.

So, aside from that, what would be the recommendation for the best E-Reader with enough material to make it worthwhile?

The reader itself needs to be good, but the price and availability of the books is a biggie too.

(I still can't see how they can charge more than a paperback for an ELECTRONIC COPY)...

Gift idea,... me needz input... :(

Sony's readers, the Nook and Amazon's Kindle all have lots of material you can buy for them. Publishers have gotten smarter about giving people access to their books in electronic form, so while the prices aren't great, most books are now available in ebook format (at least recent and classic books).

One perk about the Sony readers and the Nook is that they can open epub books. Quite a few libraries lend out epub ebooks now.

At $89 though, the Kindle 2 is hard to pass up. It has 3g too, not that web browsing is great, but hey its there.

Web browsing on an e-ink screen is a joke. Its a feature that should never had gotten any development money, honestly, there's other improvements that could be made to the readers to improve them.

They don't. The publishers set the prices, blame them. Amazon used to take losses on ebooks to make them cheaper, and the publishers fought it. It was a long fight but once the ipad and the nook were around, they were willing to pay the publishers so Amazon had no choice or the publishers were going to cut their kindle books.

Got my gf the Kindle 2 for her birthday in July and she has tripled the number of books she reads in a month. The best feature IMO is that you can use the Kindle software on your phone, iPad, and computer so you don't always have to bring it with you for occasional reading. The software and device sync where you left off.
