Don't know why they would go to the effort of faking the IHS, when it would never even fit in the socket. Bizarre.

Bummer, wonder if its from sold and shipped from Amazon UK or if its the 3rd party sellers.

Also an update from the same source
When speaking to AMD directly about this issue they issued us this response.

"It is apparent that this isolated incident is not related in any way to AMD's manufacturing or packaging, however AMD takes any reports of product tampering very seriously. As part of our ongoing efforts to help ensure consumers and businesses are sold only genuine AMD processors, we thoroughly investigate these extremely rare incidents in an effort to determine the source of the altered products, and consider all available legal remedies - including both civil and criminal prosecution - against persons found to have engaged in fraudulent actions affecting AMD products.

We are working in close cooperation with Amazon and the local enforcement authorities to conclude this incident quickly and ensure that the rigorous quality and reliability standards that AMD is known for are maintained. In addition, while AMD already implements extensive security measures to ensure the authenticity of our products, we are currently evaluating further measures to implement additional security measures for maximum future support."

Plus How to Determine the Authenticity of an AMD Boxed Processor?

I don't get it. It's a ... (genuine but older?) AMD CPU... but with the heatspreader altered to look like the newest AMD CPUs?

Where was that thread with the faked Intel i7 CPUs? Those were, I think, a similar case. They were (older) Intel LGA CPUs, but with a faked heatspreader to make them seem like a newer Intel CPU.

Edit: Here it is:

Be careful buying Intel CPUs online, as they could be fakes!

Obtain newer dead CPUs. check
Obtain 'cheap' newer CPUs. check
Take heatspreader from dead CPU and swap to 'cheap' CPU. check

Profit

Very interesting, a friend is looking at buying an Intel chip I guess I'll point him to this thread.

You forgot point #4:
Get caught committing fraud and spend 5-10 in prison. Check.

I imagine these would cause a mess for AMD or Intel RMA department. If you purchased one honestly from a shady vendor, try to RMA as DOA, could get into serious trouble if didn't keep good record of where you bought it (they would try to pin the fraud on you instead of the true fraudulent party). If you were the one committing fraud, either by selling into the market or by sending in as an RMA (and claiming you bought from someone in that condition) would probably be rather difficult to determine the validity of the claim.

Scary scenarios.

Definitely, there is no doubt.

[Regarding the Thread Title] It is a little misleading in the title saying 'Amazon' is shipping these when it is really not a direct Amazon product, but rather individuals selling on the marketplace....

This is similar to what we saw back in the day when people would re-sell laptops or computers as having X CPU when it was really an overclocked lesser CPU model. This newer issue is even worse because you are likely to not even get a working CPU, and could even damage your other components.

Your take on RMAs is important too. Who gets left holding the bag here?
