I'm a prime customer who's made lots of purchases over the years and over the course of the last year I've made several returns. Today I received an email from customer service asking me to detail each order and the reasons why I made the returns.

I see this as a precursor to cancelling my prime account and I've read stories from other people who've had this happen to them. I responded to their email fully expecting for them to cancel my account and now that they charge tax on purchases if an item is available locally it doesn't make sense to buy it online anymore.

Have any of you had Amazon CS do this to you? If so I'd love to hear about it.

That sounds more like a phishing email. People need to learn how to identify these; it's not very difficult. They very seldom come from a return address at the domain claimed, and/or they contain links that don't go to the domain. You can see where the links lead you just by mousing over them in an email client or web browser.

I'm betting that the message contains a link that doesn't go to Amazon. If so, ignore it and be more suspicious next time.

Do you have to reply to the email? Did they say "or else"?
This is their email.
Hello,

We have noticed multiple returns from your account in the past 12 months. You have also requested refunds or replacements for some items that you returned.

To help us understand the problems you might be having with your orders, please reply to this email with the order numbers and reasons for each return. We welcome any feedback about these orders that might help us improve our services.

Please learn more about our return policies in the Returns, Refunds and Title section of the Conditions of Use, available at the bottom of all Amazon.com pages.

Sincerely,

Account Specialist

"please reply to this email with..."

They are phishing for info. Amazon doesnt need a list of your order numbers and other info.

Why would you have to detail each order though? They should be able to provide you with a form with each order they have questions on.

They already have this information as they always ask for the reason of the return.

If it's legit, then it sounds like you may be on the verge of being banned from Amazon because of all your returns. Could just be an automated letter, though, that doesn't take into account the number of purchases or the ratio of returns to purchase amount.

Doing it via email reply sounds like a rather loose way of getting better explanations for the returns, and that it would take a fair amount of human labor on their end to review your response. You would think a form with each of returns listed would be the typical way they'd do it.

I don't know if his email is legit but I received a similar one many years ago (I had exchanged a number of xbox 360's trying to find one that wasn't as loud as a jet engine). It's from a different department than typical Amazon CS and after speaking to them on the phone they basically said as long as they don't feel you're abusing the return system you have nothing to worry about. I'm just more cautious about what I buy in the first place now and haven't heard from them again.

I've also had 5 or so packages "stolen" in roughly the last ten years. I think most have just been delivered to the wrong address and some people are scumbags that keep them. My neighbor has been given 4 of my packages in the last month and Fedex still can't read an address correctly. Amazon was great the first 4 times but the last one they told me to call the cops and pound sand. When the person brought over my package the next day (he lived 45 minutes from me, no idea who he was) I let Amazon know that the package had been found and CS told me to never message them again about it as I'd wasted enough of their time. Not sure what the hell happened there but it was the only rude interaction I'd ever had with Amazon CS.

Exactly which is why I did a double take when I first saw it in my in box. I have complained a lot about their delivery drivers providing security camera footage of them dropping things in the flowers rather than placing them at the front door.

Amazon employs delivery drivers in your area?
