Amazon now charging sales tax in Texas

Boooooo-urns!

Sure it will help business owners at the expense of customers. I'd love it, too if my competitors got ~8% more expensive...

What do you think? Fair? Government's don't need more money? Illegal given that they don't have a physical presence in the state? About time?

Legally you're supposed to pay the sales tax anyway.

If it's the exact same price at Amazon or Lowe's, depends on when I need it. Prime will have it here in a couple of days.

Just got taxed on a purchase this morning. These fools have no clue. Let's see... Buy something over the internet on my phone for a better price, and have it dropped off at my door.. Or go to the store, search for said item, hope they even have it, pay a higher price, then get into my has guzzling pickup and drive back home.
Tough choice. 🙄

I don't have a problem with it, but I also don't have a problem paying standard sales tax. It's only a matter of time before everyone will be paying. So whatever.

Started at 12:00am on July 1.

Amazon didn't want to go to trial with the State of Texas. So they came to an agreement to collect sales taxes in exchange for Texas dropping its $269million lawsuit.

Presence in a state = collect sales tax.

Amazon thought they were clever by using wholly owned subsidiaries(more or less acting as shell LLCs) running their distribution centers and claimed they had no presence in Texas(and several other states). Texas called them on it. I guess their lawyers didn't think that they could win vs. Texas with that line of reasoning. They wouldn't have.

Amazon, even with tax is still cheaper than buying locally.

Actually, OP, it did have a distribution center in Texas. They closed it in 2011 as a result of the lawsuit, but Texas was within it's right to demand sales tax as Amazon did have a presence. Amazon is looking at new capital investment in Texas.

I mean, it's nice while it lasts, but it's hard to feel sorry for anyone complaining about paying sales tax online.

I guess the insane amount I pay a year in property taxes, 30%+ taxes on my pay, etc.. isn't enough? Especially when half of the country doesn't even pay taxes.
If you feel you don't pay enough then they'll gladly accept a check from you.

I believe the agreement was, Texas was dropping its lawsuit, but Amazon had to reopen the distribution center, invest $200million in Texas over the next four years, and start collecting sales tax.

Under state law you were always supposed to be paying a tax on goods brought to Texas from another state, even if you already paid sales tax on the item in the state you purchased it from. Same goes for almost every other state.

Here is the(little used) Texas form that no one files even though they are legally supposed to.

So you have a problem with taxes/sales tax in general, which is perfectly reasonable. But, I haven't heard many well founded reasons for why Amazon purchases should be tax exempt.

If CPA is right, then they should. Last I heard was that they [Amazon] didn't have a presence in state. In which case, they shouldn't collect sales tax (from what I've been told). If they open up distribution centers in TX, then, yes, they should.

I'm kind of torn on the issue. I don't like the fact that stuff I buy at Amazon just increased in price by 8% overnight, but I can see the other side of the coin that it's only "fair" to collect sales tax from online merchants.

I think EVERYONE can agree that we're taxed too much as it is already. Whether it's a "tax" or a "penalty". If you think you're not taxed enough, then like OILFIELDTRASH says, any municipality, state, or the IRS will gladly take a check... 😉

Does Mexico have a sales tax? Does Amazon charge sales tax in Mexico?

Don't want to offend anyone.

But it doesn't matter to me if my Federal Income Taxes go to the crooks in DC or the crooks in Mexico City. Or even if it goes to the crooks in Austin.

But it does irritate me that my Amazon purchases will be taxed this year while they weren't last year...

They probably were taxable in your state. You just didn't pay it. Amazon was kind enough to send me a statement at the 1st of the year.

Yes, they're a bunch of crooks.

Got to pay those 200K/year union pensions somehow

STFU Texas doesn't have an income tax and if you're paying 30% then you are well into the top tax-bracket.

A sales tax is one of the most regressive taxes imaginable and you paying a shitty 8% on the small amount of your income you spend to purchase items is amazingly little to pay for all of the schools, roads and state-troupers that keep the society you live in (and which has given you the ability to make such a large income) going.

Again, no income tax in Texas, so get over yourself ass hat.

Boohoo, now Amazon has to compete with all other online businesses who have been paying taxes. Amazon's long overdue for that as they have been skirting taxes by having subsidiaries and/or third parties as a front.

amazon does/did have a presence in this state.

if you were 8% more expensive than your competitor and the only reason for that was because your competitor was part and parcel to evading taxes you'd hate that giant loophole.

Bout time Texans pay their fair share
does it ever hurt?
