I'm buying books for next semester and the used&new prices are 50% less than my university bookstore. Anyone have experience using the service?

Yeah, I have bought off it quite a bit. It's a lot like ebay in the sense you are buying from an individual in many cases, except Amazon guarantees the purchase if you have a problem you can't work out with the seller.

Check out half.com, also.

I was able to find a book on windows service programming for .NET that is out of print. It was brand new like condition. Check the seller feedback rating to make sure its decent.

But I got them for a fraction of the cost (like $10 vs $40) plus it was the only method available to get the book (none on eBay) and is the only book that exists for writing windows services with .NET ;)

OK say I needed a textbook that was $100 retail. A seller with 500 feedbacks lists it for $70, and a guy with that "just launched" rating has it for $50. Since amazon has its safe buying guarantee, is it safe enough to buy from the guy without a rating?

Use your own judgement, buy with a CC so you can have the Visa (or whomever) company cover if any problems occur (most offer this). I'm sorry I can't help you more but I've only used it like, three times :p (all were great--had my books very fast)
