<< seems like a decent price but dont know much about the printer >>

I had an HL-645 a few years ago...a good little printer, inexpensive at the time (for a laser, anyway), worked great with Linux, and it was dirt-cheap to operate. Toner was about $30 for 3000 pages or so. I sold it because I wanted something that would do color. With more than double the speed and a duplexer, this sounds like a deal. (Replacement toner cartridges look like they're about double what I paid to feed the HL-645, but they last twice as long.)

I currently have an HL-1240 and am very happy with it. What does a duplexer do?

You can get more memory at crucial.com. Just search for the printer using their "Memory Selector". They sell 32MB for $40 and 16MB for $20.

As far as ethernet card, the HL-1650 does not have a slot for it. Its sibling HL-1670N does, but that one costs much more. To set up a print server, you'll have to either buy one of those routers with built-in print server (like the SMC Barricade), or hook up the printer local to a spare PC and set up a print server on the PC, using eg. Samba on Linux, or "File and Printer Sharing" on Windows.

Good luck!

docinthebox,

Actually I think you're mistaken as to your assertion that the HL-1650 does not have a slot for a network card. All of the reviews and specifications I've read indicate that it has such a slot (even going so far as to list the model number of the card that fits in it (NC-4100h).

Furthermore, the manual for the printer over at brother's web site talks about the optional internal print server. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that the HL-1650 and HL-1670N use the same exact chassis, with the 1670N having the networking card and more memory as standard features.

A good review from ZDNet

Good price on a good printer!

Edit: Best price I've found on the print server is at Provantage. They're an excellent company to deal with.

Luv2chill, you're right. The HL-1650 does have a slot for a networking card. Thanks for pointing that out. :)
