To what assumption does the idea of a democracy make an appeal? Isn't it that, as social beings who live and interact together, a defined structure of relationships need to be established by which everybody will have an understanding of the reciprocal of each individual within the collective and that the most harmonious way to achieve what is to be considered most fair and just has to be consensually determined by counting what people think. Thus we have elections that are determined by the numbers of people who vote for and against various laws or the count of the votes of people they have elected to represent them. The truth is that people know which of two numbers is the larger when the votes are counted and that any competent individual who can count will arrive at the same conclusion.
Have you ever seen a child claim to his or her parents they were out voted when it comes to what time to go to bed? We all understand we can trust numbers. We can count our change. That leaves as an option for any who don't like being in the minority not to deny the numbers but that the numbers are actually real. And that is because each of us does not do the counting, the number of votes being too unwieldy for each of us to personally verify them. This is where the process of introducing paranoia into a society enters the process. If you can convince a majority of people to believe an evil minority is doing the counting you can make them revolt at the count and thus defeat the will of the majority by majority distrust. Thus a few cleaver people who understand that large numbers of people live their lives in a state of self hate can be made to believe anything that flatters their ego and make them feel self important, like marching on the Capital on Jan 6.
The reason that democracy arose in the first place was the unreliability of the virtue of kings. Not the worst kind of kings are back thanks to the science psychology applied to the task of self aggrandizement through cunning in advertising. People can be induced to believe what is in their actual worst interests. Greed functions best when people are asleep. Grab all the gusto you can. It is people not frogs that can be boiled one degree at a time.
