Currently doing a safari tour in South Africa.

Most of the rural roads are 1 lane highways with about half with a Nike lane sized shoulder.

I'm the us in can be frustrating to pass a slow vehicle in this situation due to curves and double lines.

I noticed something amazing most drivers move the car over the shoulder to allow fast cars to pass. So passing cars are able to pass even if there was a double line or on comming traffic as they do not actually cross the mid line.

Drivers are aware of fast cars from behind and actually care that they maybe slowing them down.

Wish us drivers adopt this.

Peace

Cell phones have made it worse in the US. The only savior will be self driving cars then speed will not matter since we can all be distracted.

The rural roads may be fine but driving in big South African cities is a different story. I spent some time working in Port Elizabeth and I never really got used to the chaos on the roads. Better than driving in India by 1000%, but still stressful. It didn't help that they drive on the wrong side of the road as well.

Lots of countries are much nicer about this than the US. Everytime I come back from driving overseas I get pissed at US drivers. Stupid or inconsiderate things I might have seen happen once or twice in 1+ weeks abroad I'll see happen 5-6 times on my way to work here. I was in Spain last week and most of the truck drivers on single lane roads would use their turn signals to indicate when it was safe for you to pass. As soon as you saw the right turn blinker you knew there was room to pass.

Please someone find a solution to people texting while driving. It's completely out of control. It's hard enough to stay alert for the normal stuff let alone the people next to you drifting into your lane and people in front of you slowing from 50 to 30 so they can continue to text while staying 100 car lengths behind the car in front of them.

Thailand is another country that's full of idiot drivers.

You see women on the back of motor bikes watching videos on their phone/laptop. No helmet.
Jump into a cab and they've taken out all the seat-belts.
Helmets? Pfftt..
You see dangerous material constantly falling off trucks.
Bus drivers who fall asleep at the wheel.
Bus drivers who race each other because they think it's fun.
Old 2 decker buses with deflated tires and a hole in the driver side. Which was covered up by ducktape.
-Yes, I took that bus to Cambodia. It was 2 hours of terror.

2nd highest death rate on the world.

This morning the lady in front of me talking on her cell phone blew right past the school zone blinking light with children and crossing guards in plain view at full speed. She couldn't be bothered to slow down at all and then when she got up to the red light she couldn't be bothered to move when it turned green. It's illegal to use a cell phone in FL while operating a motor vehicle but people do it all the time and wander all over the road as their attention is drawn to the device instead of driving. The National Safety Council has statistics showing the correlation between cell phone use while driving and accident rates but people continue to do it.
