I have been using a HP Media Smart Server EX475 to store movies, music, photos, and use as a torrent box. It crapped out. I am trying to salvage any data that I can 3TB+. Doh! I want to build a new quite, low power server that will run Ubuntu and Amahi.
It will be the only PC/Windows machine in the house. I haven't built one since college (15 years). I think it was an AMD Duron than I overclocked for my dad. My main computer is a MacBook Pro.
I will be streaming movies (handbrake .mp4 DVD backups) to a PS3 and an Apple TV, but mostly the PS3 and music (Apple Lossless Codec or FLAC) to my MacBook Pro.
I have several WD Caviar Green HDDs that I plan to reuse. Otherwise I have no old PC parts lying around. I want to do this as cheap as possible. I also I have an external 5bay eSata enclosure, so something with an eSata port multiplier would be nice.
tl;dr
Small, QUIET, LOW POWER media server
OS: Ubuntu and Amahi Media Server
Stream MP4 movies/tv shows to PS3
Stream Apple Lossless or FLAC music to MacBook Pro
Torrent box
Possibly time machine backup
What case. motherboard, hdd, etc? Under $500 for sure. I was looking at a HP 40NL, but thought I'd see if I can build something better for a similar price.
