AM3 processor on AM2 motherboard?

Simple question and I'm sure you geniuses will have an answer. I have an AsRock A780FullDisplayPort motherboard based system using the cheapest dual core athlon available at the time of build, the BE-5200 (which was fine for storing/streaming videos). It's served me well but I'm finding video encoding takes literally days.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the new Athlon II X4 processor but wonder if it'll work since the X4s are AM3 processors while the motherboard states AM2 support.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

That board is AM2/AM2+ so it will support an AM3 processor but currently, the Athlon II's aren't listed in the CPU support list.

Click me.

Doesn't mean that it "won't" work, but YMMV currently. I would think that the BIOS would be upgraded at some point to support the chip (if necessary) of AsRock would verify that the Athlon II chips run OK and update the chart. I would contact AsRock and ask.

Wow, I love you! Well, not literally, but i clicked around Asrock's page for an hour trying to find a list of compatible CPUs.

Thanks for saving me so much time! I'll check out the list and see if there are any CPUs in my price range already, otherwise I'll contact them about the athlon ii x4
