AM3 CPU on AM2 motherboard

I currently have Athlon 64 x2 6000+ and a Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 (AM2 socket) motherboard. On the Gigabyte website says that a AM3 cpu's are supported (I'm planning on puttin in a Phenom X3 720). Is this true, and will I see performance boost.
