Am3+ board with Am3 processor

I was looking into upgrading my motherboard (Asus M4A88T-M) to support SATA III (opposed to sata II).

I currently have an AM3 Phenom II processor and I was trying to figure out if I can install the AM3 processor into a AM3+ motherboard?
 
I have an AM3+ mainboard, Gigabyte 990XA-UD3, and am currently running an AMD X6 1055t.
Only problem I have is that my 1866 ram will only run at 1600 stable. I'm sure when I upgrade to an FX-6300 it will run at rated speed no problem though.
